"review": "As someone who's poured countless hours into Bethesda games in the past, I eagerly jumped into Starfield with a blend of excitement and skepticism. Right off the bat, the world-building is top-notch; it's everything you'd expect from a Bethesda SciFi RPG. Immersing myself into its expansive space adventures was truly captivating. Yet, it wasn't long before I ran into some classic Bethesda quirks.\n\nNavigating the game's non-existent map felt more like a chore at times, and while I appreciate a good story-driven game, the excessive dialogue sometimes stretched less significant tasks far longer than they should be, particularly the start of the game felt very slow compared to Skyrim and Fallout 4. The absence of seamless space-to-planet transitions, as seen in titles like \"No Man's Sky,\" was sorely missed.\n\nBut despite these flaws, Starfield shines in many areas. Its ship building, questlines, and companions were notable highlights for me. My hope is that Bethesda will continue to refine and address these issues in future updates.\n\nI'd recommend Starfield to anyone looking for a deep space RPG adventure, but be prepared for its imperfections. I still believe it's a worthy addition to Bethesda's repertoire, flaws and all.\n\nP.S. It's always good to remember that Bethesda games offer a great platform for modders so it's likely that even if Bethesda doesn't address all personal issues with the game, the modding community probably will in time.",

"review": "Why don't I recommend this game? \n\nIt is not worth the price... Full stop.\n\nYou can find fun in this game but for 70 euro it just isn't worth it. You will spend a lot of time frustrated with the menus that are the same they used in Skyrim 12 years ago.\n\nThe AI is absolutely a joke. NPC's forget you exist if they turn the back to you in the middle of a fight. \nOut of sight out of mind AI in 2023. Pretty sure I played Morrowind 21 years ago with better AI.\n\nLoading screens. There's a lot of loading in this game. Now I run it on a top end computer with a new SSD, so it is quite fast loading for me, but I have no idea how bad it can get on a normal computer.\nThe non stop loading between every location, planet, system and even buildings make for a very disjointed feeling. Often it feels smaller than most open world games from the last 20 years because you never really feel that you are in a large area except when exploring planets. \n\nShipbuilding and outpost building will eat hours of your time and it is fun to try. But you quickly realize that most of the time you spend doing it is trying to figure out how it works because of a terrible UI and very little information or help from the game.\n\nQuests and story feels bland. Voice acting is fine but most of the quests and writing just isn't very good. Neither are the companions really. \nChoices don't mean much and after playing BG3 so recently it just highlights how bad Bethesda is at this. \nUninspired, bland and boring writing and character building.\n\nA lot of this will be fixed with mods. There are already UI mods and inventory mods that far surpasses what Bethesda made and that is a huge problem.\nWhy is downloading mods the first thing I need to do to get an enjoyable experience with a 70 euro game?\n\nIt shouldn't be and this is a particular Bethesda issue that goes back many games now. \n\nIf you like Bethesda and you have money to burn then get the game. There are definitely moments that you will enjoy. It is very very clunky and I don't think Bethesda has made a good game here. \nIt's simply outdated graphically and mechanically.\n\nAn interesting comparison to make, is the evolution of Larian over a decade and the devolution of Bethesda. While Larian builds and adds to their mechanics, and make ever better games that are more complex, Bethesda makes ever worse game with less complexity and the same clunky issues they have had for 20+ years never seem to get fixed.\n\nThe next part is more of a personal rant so you can ignore it.\n\nThis is a game, that Bethesda claims to have spent 25 years thinking about, and yet the universe they presented to us is some of the most uninspired and bland world building I have ever seen.\n\nIt feels in many ways like the concept for the universe, was thought out after reading \"the end of history\" by Fukuyama, and then ignored the next 30 years of actual history, because how else would you create a universe, where the world suddenly comes together, at the earths demise within 50 years? \n\nBethesda wants us to believe, that within 150 years humanity not only forgets nationalism and ideology, but everything that made them different from each other for thousands of years. All human history and culture erased the moment humans discovered that the earth was ending.\n\nBethesda could have gone an infinite number of interesting ways with the story to create a dynamic and believable universe. Instead they opted for the childish Fallout ideas that \"work\" in Fallout because it is set in the USA.\n\nWhy not have different waves of humans leaving the earth? Why not have regional world blocks like say the US, China, Europe and Africa settling different parts of the universe with their own \"version\" of how the world ended and what the different factions did to leave the earth and save their people? \n\nNo Bethesda wants us to believe that human research causes the world to end withing 50 years of 2150.\nThis is discovered in 2149 and what does the world do when it learns that some scientists destroyed the world? \n\nWell... We all come together within a decade and we form the United Colonies and set out for space.\nNo harm no foul right? It's not like someone just destroyed the earth to invent grav drives... Meh forgive and forget right? It's not like people are murdering each other in reality for perceived slights that go back centuries.\n\nNo no... All historical tensions, distrust and even religion just vanished within 50 and instead we get what? \n\nWell... A faction called United Colonies (and just a reminder that in this universe humanity decided that citizenship and the right to live in the United Colonies requires military service) that looks like some corporate commercial and the Freestar Collective that somehow has ended up looking like cowboys. \nLast but not least we have the Va'Ruun, who is just another generic religious faction that has zero to do with earth. \nBut not one of the major religions or nationalities from earth seem to have survived. \nUninspired garbage.\n\nWe erased all human cultures, histories and identities but somehow this abomination is something Bethesda thinks is creative or inspired world building. \n\nA billion Chinese? A billion Indians? A billion Africans? 750 million Europeans? Nah... None of those were important or powerful enough to have any meaningful impact on this Bethesda universe except for a few last names. \n\nNo... It is a universe that feels like the earth was America and America left and settled the universe after some corporation destroyed earth while playing with grav drives. \nA corporate CEO created the \"United Colonies\" and convinced \"the world\" to just leave together.\nSome Alex Jones dude thought he spoke to a snake so he made a religious faction. \nAnd an American weirdo created a cowboy inspired faction.\n\nWell done Bethesda... Inspiring work\n",

The hundreds of fetch quests that all consist of \"land on empty planet, chase another clue, repeat\" would be more bearable if there was more gameplay and less rolling my eyes because Bethesda can't be bothered to attempt rendering multiple rooms in the same building.\n\nBottom line, this game seems to have some promising aspects but was overall ruined by Bethesda's lazy execution.",

"review": "The game isn't really bad-bad per se. The story, side missions are great. The loot is interesting and fun, tho a transmog option would be nice, or ability to move legendary perks from one set to another.\n\nMy gripes with the game is the bugs and glitches. There are game breaking bugs, like being unable to shoot your guns until you visit an enhance+ shop and change your appearance. This was a bug in fallout 4, still in starfield. Key NPCs can also at times just ascend into the sky and become unreachable and you're unable to complete the missions associated with them.\n\nLots of floating things, trees, bushes, bases etc. NPCs ascending into the sky then falling to their deaths. Npcs clipping thru walls etc.\n\nBut by far my biggest gripe is the god awful crappy User interface. Couple of examples:\nTo fast travel you use X button, except if you fast travel from mission interface, then its suddenly R then E. Why isn't it still X?\nIf you're building your ship, WASD pans around the view, until you select a part to build then W and S suddenly starts selecting different parts of that category rather than panning the view so you can see where you place it. \nIf you're in ship combat and use inverted y-axis, mouse forward pans down, like using a flight stick. Then the target indicator doesn't change to reflect it so its now in reverse.\nAlso when targeting n ship combat, pressing R after lock on and you destroy the ship, you're still in lock on view, it doesnt exit it automatically, and the intuitive option would be to press R again, but no, now its ESC.\nIf i'm in planet view, i have to click back arrow 3 times, or press tab 3 times to go back to galaxy view, why not just a button for that?\nIf you want to hail something in space, you press E, but then you accidentally hold it for a little too long cause you had to hold X for a second to get there. And you hold E for a second, you now exit the pilot seat instead, and have to watch the animation play, then watch animation play again as you sit back down.\nThe location discovery and XP awards in the middle of the field of view is super annoying if you're in combat and it just blocks your view of enemies. (there is a mod already to fix this).\nAnd i'm sure there'll mods to fix the majority of issues eventually, but why does it have to be so bad now? Bethesda have honestly gotten complacent with the modders making their games good.",

"review": "It's.... dated.\n\nAt best, I guess I'd describe it as a hodgepodge of meh-ly implemented stuff, none of which is all that fun individually nor all that unique/revolutionary, and a bunch of it just feels clunky. There is a good amount of subplots/story elements to dig into, and the voice acting is pretty good for the most part. I guess the hope from Bethesda is that the mod community will save this game in the years to come. Good luck to the modders, I guess.\n\nThe worlds feel bland, and exploration is not all that interesting. Fast travel is required, so there's little meandering around discovering new things. Quests are generally ok, but also very 2010-ish in structure -- talk to person A, get item X from Dungeon Y, receive generic reward. You'll potentially get lots of hours played by getting bored, walking away mid game, and realising you left it running the next mornin.\n\nSpace wizard powers are totally disjointed from the theme of the game, and seem to just be a reskin of dragonborn shout mechanics from skyrim, which is incredibly lazy in a \"triple A\" game. Like, in a futuristic, space travel-y type game... I would expect the \"see people through walls\" ability to be thermal goggles (and to be ubiquitous in the game world, so much that 'shielding' should be a mod on armor to hide from it). But instead, it's a magic power reserved for space wizards. What the??\n\nThey also took a bleh approach to thievery, essentially just plopping what they had from skyrim into a space setting. Their creative sorts were so creative, that they managed to rename lockpicks to digipicks, and keep basically the exact same functionality -- and applied in almost the exact same way as in skyrim. Locked containers with generally mediocre rewards; \"stealth\" missions that are just sneaking around picking locked chests. Where's my targeted EMP to take out lights? Hacking a guards neural mod to hide in plain sight? Using a small recon drone to scout a facility? Nah, they just renamed lockpicks instead? Feels like a real missed opportunity.\n\nThey have an outpost system, which has potential, but is just janky and essentially pointless. There's fuel in the game, but no need to refuel at outposts or anything. I'm guessing this was a decision based on not 'forcing' players to need outposts to explore far out, as some players may not like building outposts. There're issues in outpost building too, in that nothing snaps/aligns well -- which makes it difficult to work with. Even more, there's practically no benefit to having an outpost, aside from storing random piles of mats that are used for outpost building. You could potentially try and sell minerals etc, but its a really slow way to earn money in game. They say outposts can be attacked, mine never was in a play through on hardest difficulty. They could've kept the fuel costs, and given explorer-types an option/quest-line to obtain a way to refuel in remote systems -- or just added more 'purpose' to the outposts in general.\n\nSpeaking of outpost disappointment, outposts also get a huge amount of attention in the skill trees. The skill trees are kinda half-arsed. You spend skill points to get things like jet pack functionality -- having a jetpack isn't enough. You spend skill points to increase your ship weapon damage, because it makes your character... press the button to fire your ships guns 10% better? You spend skill points to increase your ships weight limit.... in space, where weight doesn't matter so much? There's an accuracy system for guns, but skilling up increases your damage -- accuracy improvements are done via (basically) enchantments/gear mods. Feels backwards, and nonsensical. If you're firing a bazooka, how experienced you are shouldn't impact the blast radius of the explosion -- but it's totally reasonable to imagine a less experienced person not knowing how to aim the damn thing. And there's already a mechanic in the game for it.\n\nSpeaking of skills and mechanics, where you likely don't bother spending skill points is persuasion, even though its an option. The persuasion stuff is just stupidly broken. You can go up to the last boss of the main quest, and persuade your way out of the fight, with zero skill focus. I don't have an issue with an option to diplomatically solve the conflict, but being able to do it without any commitment before hand is bonkers -- like walking in to the end battle in starter gear and cruising through.\n\nI could go on, but I guess the above gives a good sense of how things are off kilter in this one -- and how plausible it may be that modders could fix it.\n",

      "review": "
If you like Bethesda's games, then you'll likely love Starfield!
\n\nStarfield is one of the most hyped games this 2023, Bethesda's first IP in over a quarter of a century. BUT! Even though how big the hype is or how it was advertised, it does not necessarily reflect how great the game you might think it is. As much as I like Bethesda's games, Starfield is really not the next gen game I was hoping for.\n\nI think Starfield is 80% Fallout and 20% Skyrim. Starfield improves on the gameplay mechanics of Fallout and Skyrim and is presented on space. So you'll get a big world (or galaxies) to explore, many quests to take on, lots of NPCs you can talk and interact with, companions and can romance them, lots of stuff to loot, tons of game mechanics and content you can enjoy. Those things are truly a trademark within Bethesda.\n\nAnd since this is a Bethesda game, there are also issues that drag Starfield, but surprisingly only a handful of these did not stood out for me. Enemy/NPC AI is similar to Fallout 4 which was released on 2015, animations are sometimes janky, companions sometimes blocks the way or is in the way, some quests are bland or generic, lots of loading screens. All of these issues are dated or old so you might find Starfield not a next gen game as advertised. Surprisingly, it is not buggy as I thought it would be. The game was smooth, a handful of bugs that are miniscule, and had no game breaking issues so far.\n\nCompleted the game and I find it enjoyable. I think it is really a solid game but it is not the next gen Bethesda game I was hoping for. The game is truly overwhelming. There are tons of things to do. It took me almost 25 hours to fully get the gist of the game and its gameplay loop. Other's mileage may vary. You can do main quest but get distracted to other things like side quests or crafting. The ship building is totally awesome, you can really change every part of a ship and upgrade on those. There are tons of skills to choose and upgrade, Lots of crafting and upgrading, base building and extract resources, large cities you can explore, and tons of star systems with planets or moons to explore. Undeniably, modding is a part of Bethesda games and I'm really looking forward to what mods can be added to the game. \n\nThe game is pricey and I recommend you'd wait for a sale before buying.\n\nI'd give Starfield a solid 8/10.",

"review": "Starfield is the video game equivalent of AI art. At first glance you see a pretty picture but as your eyes focus you begin to see how hollow and empty it is. With that said, Starfield is not a bad game. It is just a game I wouldn't recommend to most people. Bethesda games have always been about exploration and despite being the largest game yet, it has the worst exploration. I am not exaggerating when I say there is no variety between bunkers/dungeons. You go to an abandoned mine, it is the same every time. It will have the same layout, enemy spawns, even the loot will always spawn in the same location. Instead of exploration being the best part of the game as with other Bethesda titles it just becomes a tedious chore. Speaking of tedious, the writing is my next major complaint. The dialogue is abysmal, world building is bland, and the campaign will leave you feeling thoroughly underwhelmed. For most people I would suggest passing on Starfield or waiting until you can get it on sale. However if you are a die hard Bethesda fan, played their entire catalog and got an itch for more, Starfield will provide you a relatively stable game, decent gunplay and a handful of pleasant environments to explore.",

You can continue to explore and find worlds that do have resources you need or hidden outposts to look through.\n\nStarfield is an RPG with hundreds of hours of quests to complete and characters to meet. Most quests will also vary on your character’s skills and decisions, massively changing the outcome of your playthrough. Try creating different characters with backgrounds and characteristics that clash or are oppositive of your previous character. You will feel like you are playing a totally different game. Put points in different skills from a character you’ve previously created, and you are now faced with completely different decisions to make and difficulties to encounter. There are so many layers to Starfield, that you will find things you’ve never knew were possible after playing for hundreds of hours.\nEven after completing the Main Story, your adventure doesn’t end! You can continue onto New Game+ to keep exploring Starfield and all that is out there!\n\nTo provide feedback to development for Starfield, please feel free to submit your feedback using this form here: https://beth.games/45BDMKb\n\nNever stop exploring!\n\nBethesda Customer Support"

"review": "Its just not great.\nThere is no exploration. I mean yeah, you can visit Planets, but they feel all the same. Nothing to see besides the same 6 or so Copy-Paste landmarks. Nothing handcrafted like in Fallout or Skyrim. No environmental Storytelling. And the worst part...you fast travel everywhere. There is no Environment on your path to your Mission. You just click a button and poof, you are near your Mission.\n\nQuests? Mostly boring. The NASA Mission was fun, but thats it. Feels like ChatGPT randomly generated a few generic mission objectives.\n\nNew Game Plus? Wasted time. You can level up your Abilities, sure, but since every single Temple is exactly the same with exactly the same, boring \"minigame\", it is much more likely to burnout before you find enjoyment in this. Replaying the story as Starborn is just a boring \"skip this skill check\" or \"fast forward to the result\".\n\nCrafting...forget it. You cant craft Ammo, you cant craft Weapons, but the World is littered with junk items...which you have no use for. You can modify Weapons...but since there is no reason to get new ones, you do that pretty much just once.\n\nSettlements? Yeah, i cant really understand why that is there in the first place. You can create some things there, but nothing useful. The only useful thing is the Landing Pad to get access to most but Ship Parts...but not the special ones. Crafting things? What for?\n\nShip Building is terrible. You cant influence the interior pathing, and every single change you make resets everything you did inside. Not just the room you changed, no, the whole damn ship. Every single Item you placed is stored in Cargo.\n\nTrading, Smuggling and such...why? Vendors have such a small amount of Credits, you cant sell most things anyway. They dont scale with your level or NG+. And even if they would have enough credits...what should you use them for? You just need to find a single Weapon you like and thats it. The Economy is completely broken.\n\nSo...dont expect a \"Bethesda Game\" from this. Wait for Modders to fix it.",

"review": "Astoundingly, incredibly boring.\n\nExpect to be overburdened after looting enemies after about one or two fights, expect huge, vast and completely empty landscapes and a lack of any interesting story or characters. Enemies begin to become pretty bullet-spongey later, but its not really much of a hassle other than taking any damage interrupts your own reloading, you'll be swimming in ammunition with no real way to spend it. It feels like a poor mix of Fallout and No Man's Sky, without the charm or character of either.\nThey have the same sort of crafting as in fallout, except now instead of being able to break down items you find in the world you have to find element-specific resources, meaning the world filled with clutter and trash is really just that - clutter without any use. \nThis has a second problem of making crafting annoying to find resources for, not even including the fact you need to invest perk points (one per level, very slow levelling - level 13 at 20 hours in and all i do is wander around looking for fights) to unlock the ability to research the ability to craft... what is essentially the exact same gun mods you find in fallout 4 or fallout 76.\nThere's a lot of STUFF... but there's just... no game.\nif you want a fun space fallout style game, go check out Outer Worlds. Made by a smaller dev group and a dozen times more entertaining than whatever starfield is.\n\nSome people are enjoying it though, so I guess if you are interested in a extremely slow paced spaceytime then you might find something to like.\n\n(Edit update - 43 hours playtime)\nI've tried to give the game more of a chance: I played through the rest of the main story.\nThe story never really 'picked up', the ending had a fairly obnoxious fight that involved everything teleporting around wildly, and the ending was pretty flat. A few things to note though:\n\n-Your items, money, and ships/crew DO NOT carry over into NG+\n\n-Just use Rifles, the game wants you to use rifles and it will give you piles of unique or legendary tier rifles like crazy. I went with pistols and did not see one unique pistol outside of the Keelhauler (which was... just awful). I ended up completing the game with just a white Advanced Regulator that carried me through - not to mention most pistols do about the same as most rifles, have a considerably smaller magazine size, and also most of them reload slower than assault rifles (in cases like the kraken, slower even than the minigun)\nHeck, there were several ammo types that I never even found guns that can use them.\n\n-Most of the companions were pretty bland, there were a few times where there was the start of a decent story or characterization but that was mostly just Barret\n\n-The game's aesthetic is DEFINITELY just fetishizing the aesthetic of NASA and sciency space-talk without any deeper meaning or attention to detail than buzzwords and \"look at all the big tubes\": there's even a level where you trek through an abandoned NASA and its just... so dull...\n\n-you can find powers that function like your shouts in skyrim, but instead of doing any dungeony adventuring to get them, you just land on a planet, trek across an empty desert to a big building, do a REALLY OBNOXIOUS zero-g puzzle involving chasing light around a room as it teleports, then going back to the Eye and doing it all over again. I believe there are 24 powers in the game, I only found a couple that were any use - namely the reactive shield and the one that restores your Co2 - allowing you to ignore carry weight limits)\n\nThe game just... never got better. I really wanted to like it. I'm really annoyed I wasted so much time trying to like it. It is easily the weakest thing Bethesda has made in decades... there's SO much work put in, so many fully voiced NPCs, so much put INTO THE GAME... and it is just vastly, incredibly empty. I really wish they'd just focused on a few planets or solar systems, really spent time and fleshed them out... But instead we have a game that's both as full of stuff and as completely empty as the vast void of space.",

The visuals in the game are generally decent, far superior to previous Bethesda titles. Nothing ground breaking, but solid. Audio work across the game is another great highlight, particularly the engine SFX and Music. The voice actors have also done incredible work. There is a lot of fun to be had outside of the main story, and even the sidequests. Base building, mission boards and more, can easily take you hundreds of hours. Ship combat is fun, and don't even get me started on the ship builder - incredibly fun!\n\nBut it's not without it's typical Bethesda jank. Are there bugs? Absolutely. General quality issues like bad combat AI? Yup. Was there anything that really prevented me from enjoying the game, or broke the game? No, not at all. There's a lack of overall refinement to the game, which I assume is due to it being kicked out the door this year. I think it could have launched after the new year, in a much better state. \n\nA lot of the negativity around Starfield stems from false assumptions that people made on their own. Bethesda never lied, or mis-marketed the game. They showed it off multiple times, and explained what it was. And if you've ever played any former BGS title like Elder Scrolls or Fallout, you'd know the limitations of their game engine. If you loved prior Bethesda titles like Fallout/ElderScrolls, you'll more than likely enjoy your time in the Starfield.",

"review": "It was very clear from all the pre-release press that Bethesda was pushing shortly prior to launch that they thought they were putting out a slam-dunk with Starfield. \n\nThat is absolutely not the case.\n\nIt's difficult to describe using language just how much of a resounding disappointment Starfield is. I don't just mean it didn't live up to my personal expectations–following the perpetual debacle that was Fallout 76, I went into Starfield with my expectations strongly tempered. No, purely on its own merits, Starfield is a mixed experience at best, with the handful of bright spots to be found badly undermined by an ocean of pain points and half-baked design.\n\nI don't think it'd be right to call Starfield a bad game exactly. It's “just” very shallow and repetitive, and none of its core mechanics are good enough to sustain the hundreds of hours of samey, recycled content it expects you to swallow. Every firefight feels the same. There are only two types of Human enemies: person with gun and person with melee weapon. The only difference between low-level enemies and high-level enemies is inflating hit point totals and damage output. The same holds true for starship combat: if you’ve been in one dogfight, you’ve been in them all, barring a few set-piece battles that occur during specific quests. What about exploration, long considered Bethesda’s signature strength? Nope. Landing on planets works the same way. You set your craft down in the middle of a wide-open field that’s mostly empty, then walk across open ground to one of a handful of prebuilt points of interest. Depending on the planet there might be a few resources or corrosive vents scattered about, and a few kinds of flora and fauna. \n\nThat’s it. No Man’s Skyrim, indeed. \n\nIt becomes apparent very quickly that absolutely everything you’re looking at through 90%+ of your playtime is based off of a template. The over-reliance on procedural content–which is utterly necessary to realize the premise of a space game where you can land anywhere on any planet–cuts directly against the objective Bethesda set for themselves of creating an immersive universe that people could play for literally hundreds of hours. It’s not all bad of course. There are positives, such as the fantastic art design and solid-feeling gunplay–the latter in particular is certainly the best any Bethesda game has ever had. However, these points of light count for little when the game’s basic structure is so compromised, and are counterbalanced by other flaws that I’ve yet to even mention, such as the performance issues, questionable enemy AI, bland writing, lazy loot system, awful user interface…\n\nIt's remarkable to me that a talented and motivated group of people can put so much effort into something only for the result to feel so underwhelming. There's certainly no shortage of ambition in setting out to create a universe with 1000 fully explorable planets. I'd normally consider such ambition laudable, but Bethesda isn't some small indie studio with good ideas that just needs one or two more tries to get it right. Despite the lengthy development period–including being postponed by almost a full year–and despite how much passion Pete Hines and Todd Howard assure us Bethesda's employees poured into this decades-in-the-making project (Bethesda’s first original universe in over 25 years!), the final product just doesn't come together.\n\nIt took me a while to be able to put it into words, but I think I’ve finally got it: playing Starfield feels like you're playing everyone's IDEA of the perfect space adventure video game, but nothing more. It has all the features you'd expect from such an experience, but only in the most basic, bare-bones sense you could possibly imagine--as if Starfield was developed entirely by Bethesda's marketing department, and all they cared about was having a technically-true list of things that you could do in the game that they could put in writing on the back of the box. It is a result that is altogether unbecoming of such a prominent and successful dev house.\n\nI have just under 32 hours logged in-game at time of writing, which ought to be a mere drop in the bucket for the kind of experience Starfield sets out to deliver, and I’m not sure I can bring myself to boot the game up again because the defining emotion of the past 10 hours playing it has been boredom. Already, not having so much as visited even 10% of the available star systems, I feel like I’ve seen most of what Starfield has to offer. The magic is gone.\n\nI still play Skyrim to this day. I’m glad to go on-record as someone who thinks it is a historic masterpiece. I’m even more willing to say that Starfield doesn’t capture a fraction of the sense of immersion and adventure that that 12-year-old game can still evoke in me.\n\nIf Bethesda feels that Starfield is an outcome they can be proud of, then I will be dreading rather than anticipating the release of The Elder Scrolls VI.",

"review": " I would say for me personally this game is subpar. Perhaps I have played enough other titles in my life that I feel numb to what they did here.\n\n I kept coming back to this game everyday since release like I was on a strange drug of hope that I would find something that would really wow me. This game is $70 and what kept me going further was me being optimistic about it getting better. This game is not BAD but it falls off after a point, there is a lot that could have been done better, I had higher hopes since this is Bethesda. I was hoping to find more variations of enemies to fight, maybe some large colossal monsters/bosses that make you feel small, intelligent hostile alien humanoids either advanced with space craft of their own or a primitive race stuck to just a planet, or just more different hostiles that give more of a sense of danger. This game had me feeling EH most of the time, nothing really surprised me here. I don't really feel immersed or connected much in this game, everyone and everything feels stale or soulless, there are no characters in this one that feel cool or bad ass to me, I really feel the noticeable lack of masculine characters in this game. After a while I just started ignoring the dialogue and just skimming through what they would say in the subtitles below and skip before they even finish talking. I started growing more and more impatient with what the npcs had to say the longer I played. Dialogue choices are just an illusion, the choices that progress you through the conversation either all say the same thing and are written differently or there is just plainly one option and the other options have them giving extra unnecessary information about the thing or whatever the topic is and then it recycles you back to the same choices until you are funneled to that one option generally located at the top. There is also a lot of pointless filler dialogue that annoyed me, it reminded me when I used to write essays as a kid and put unimportant fluff into them just to meet the required length.\n\n Cosmetic variations of clothing and armor in this game started to just repeat itself - I was hoping things would get more bad ass and give more unique features but I was starting to see the same old guns and clothing with slightly different names and perhaps some different attachments, the rarity level and stats but it was all very much the same.\n\n I will say I enjoyed the ship building part of the game, kinda mildly bothered at how I would have to fly to other places just to get other variations of parts I was seeking. I would attempt to build the ship I wanted and have to put placeholder parts on it because I knew the superior reactor/shield or better matching/looking part was only available at another hub/system. you would think there would be just some universal catalog as if you were online shopping and some actual logistics in the game to maybe have all parts available and sold to all the major hubs/systems and maybe just make certain parts more expensive if you don't buy it from its main place of origin as if there was a shipping cost added on to it. Often I would have a vision for the ship I wanted to build as I got more familiar with ships and parts but I knew I would have to fly around to all the major hubs to round up all the parts I desired for my build. I cant comment too much on outposts as I only ever set a few things down like some storage and walked away, as I really did not want to commit to start building on some barren planet I knew I wouldn't visit much. I tended to put all the things I needed on my ship and just built a big ass class C ship, I ended up putting the bay in the center front of my ship and came across a bug where at a certain city's landing pad I would spawn under my ships bay and be stuck every time I tried to leave my ship, so I ended up having to toggle collision via console to get out all while that ship technician guy is just watching me struggle with his smug ass face and clipboard.\n\n The bugs in this game are present and I have come across some minor things like the guns I put on display in my ships armory keep despawning or other ships spawning/collided into my ship when its on the landing pad preventing me from entering my ship. I always found a way around bugs by using fast travel thankfully so it never really bothered me much, I know these large Bethesda games always come out with bugs, I don't really get phased much by the bugs so as long as it doesn't do something catastrophic as they can always be fixed later on by those responsible or eventually modders. Some people do look funky though, eyes popping out of their heads like they have seen some shit, I will just roll with it and say perhaps that is just how people can look in the future maybe... idk.\n\n A major thing that bothered me when I started playing was the fluidity of the game, I find myself navigating menus more then actually out and about exploring stuff. The loading is fast but it is still a mental divider in between everything and kills my immersion, there is no area packed with content that you can pretty much stay in long enough to avoid the map menu to continue exploring, you just keep having to enter menu to bounce around like a pinball on all these different planets where you spend 20 minutes tops scanning all resources and actually doing everything there then before you know it you find yourself in menu and wondering where you want to fly next then you poof into the system then again into menu to choose the piece of planet to fly down to. I fly around a lot going to many different planets and there is the same copy pasted points of interest on these planets and the random set of minerals that decided to be on that planet and maybe there is wildlife to massacre to level up weapon skills or maybe not but that's usually it in a nutshell, oh and as well as the other ship(s) that you will see land off in the distance 30 seconds after you exit your ship so you can venture over there and steal a new ship which doesn't sell for much after its registered. So I kept flying to more places further out from the starter systems and its pretty much all the same shit, its like being in the backrooms but with planets with the same but different junk you have already seen and you are just doing the same old motions every time. I wish there were more unique areas, this random generated stuff doesn't actually feel like content, it all boils down to being just another prefab filled with bad guys in space suits or civilians. There is no notable area other than the main hubs that I feel is worth remembering to come back to later. \n\n I wish there was more spicy stuff in this game, the game also plays it so safe with current day narrative and I don't know why it's rated M. It's a space game with a story where you can customize your ship, build an outpost, collect items/gear and then shoot the same non iconic creatures and bad guys, I think that's the problem for me, nothing feels iconic or worth remembering, no real antagonist that gives you a drive. I knew this game was Over hyped and even after watching a few reviews I still had enough faith to give it my personal go and it is what I thought it would be. Again, Its not a bad game at all its just at most average. I just cant be fooled by procedural generation to give me the illusion that there is much content and many areas to explore, its all the same experience and approach for me everywhere I land in a nutshell. I don't need all these planets if they are all generally doing the same thing. Once you grasp how everything works in this game it loses its entertainment value fast.\n\n Perhaps I will come back if there are any big game changing overhaul mods that come out or extra content, I know there is stuff tucked away I probably missed, but I pretty much experienced all the basics of the game and I got all the entertainment I can get out of it.",

"review": "This is a really good Bethseda game, that has been done with love and care! It takes you away from our daily lifes and really gives you the feeling of living a second outer space life. It does this by the vastness and richness of the npcs lifes around you and the lore of the world around you. It uses all the tricks, dialogues, skill trees, choices from let's say more Fallout like than Skyrim. But it does it in a beautiful and carefully crafted environment with lovely details, like your parents visiting you or other things, depending on chosen background. Basically it's what you have known from a Bethseda game but in a new and exciting setting. Some criticize the lack of innovation, I enjoy it, I can play it right a way and enjoy the content more than the complexity. But I understand it will speak mostly to dialog readers and old school rpg fans. Some criticize the empty and vast world, I would say they complement the story and crafted content part as a silent actor to make space believable and realistic, do not focus on it, It ist not No man's sky and it's a good thing!\nIt is clean and only has normal signature Bethseda bugs, with some NPCs walking into you, but it is amazingly stable and well finished for a game in our days! What would I say is negativ? The fast travel option is to tempting and to readily available at the beginning, so you have a little immersion loss if you are lazy. Love it will play it for hours and hours!",

That introduction and initial 10-12 hrs can be boring.\n- Script writing is laughably bad at most points. Voices are ok, plenty dialogue but very hack.\n- Space combat is basic and dull.\n- Outpost building is uninspired. Takes too long and too great an investment initially.\n- Graphics are OK at best, facial animations and animation in general are quite wooden and dated.\n- No maps, unforgivable. Shoddy, shoddy work on this part. Creates confusion and further disjoints the experience.\n- Un-optimized, garbage tier performance. Port is criminal. UI and Inventory is unforgivable at times.\n- Walk everywhere encumbered because the engine cant handle vehicles.\n- Space USA. Where are all the other cultures? Blinkered design. Zero edge.\n- Feels like traveling from one fishbowl to another instead of feeling like a vast open space with worlds\n\nNo real progress from Skyrim or Fallout 4. Same engine, same bugs, same loading screens. Same AWFUL AI and insane Inventory systems. The space travel system is a disgrace. People talk about the dangers of AI, more risk initiating combat with a banana. Everything can be gamed/cheesed. Enemies still just get stuck on small objects, bug out or bounce around. The physics are hilariously bad. Player also clips on small objects and gets stuck constantly. Companion AI is somehow worse that ever, block you constantly, useless in combat other than a bullet shield. Why do we have to endure this? Identity? The engine was dated in 2015 and basically beyond a meme at this point. Copy pasta, reused assets. Reused ideas, space powers? Star-dragon-born? Just do one, this company is creatively bankrupt it might appear in many regards. Really painful to see just how under baked this all is and how little they seem to have managed to progress in 7 years++.\n(Not to mention the first 20 seconds of the game being blatant cringe in the face of \"equality\")\n\nHow much can modders actually do for this game? Not so sure. Removal of loading screens would go a huge way. Redesign the cities and add maps. The scope is certainly there but at this point its a 5/10, wait.",

"review": "In a word: bland.\n\nIn three words: bland and forgettable.\n\nIn a lot more words: \n\nWhat was billed as the next big innovation in gaming is, in reality, just a re-skinned version of every other Bethesda game. That in an of itself isn't why I recommend staying away though. I love Bethesda games, but the reason I love them is the story and the world building. Starfield has all the problems of a Bethesda game without the benefit of a beloved IP to prop it up. It is full of bugs, glitches, mediocre combat, sometimes frustrating mechanics and a game engine that should have been retired a decade ago, but none of the heart or emotion.\n\nPast Bethesda games had a story you could connect with, and it is often a personal story. Fallout 3: find your father. Fallout 4: find your son. Skyrim: save the world from dragons. Starfield: go get space magic for reasons. It feels so impersonal that a good chunk of the story is attempting to explain to you why you should care, yet somehow I still have no idea why I should.\n\nSimilarly the characters you meet in Starfield are bland and forgettable. So much so I honestly can't remember the name of a single one of them after 100+ hrs of game play. I think one guy's name started with a B, and there was the boring space cowboy with a daughter. No idea what their names are. Yet somehow 10+ years later I still remember Three Dog, Preston, Mjoll the Lioness and a host of others from old Bethesda games. I'm not saying they were all likable, but they were memorable. \n\nIn other Bethesda games you also have factions that can impact the game in significant ways, often resulting in completely different endings based on the choices you make. That makes the story feel much more personal, it is your story because you decided how it will unfold. In Starfield your choices are irrelevant other than opening up a few boring story lines and changing the voice actors in the end. Some of this I think is due to the NG+ game play being baked into the story as some kind of silly groundhogs day time loop or multiverse. In theory that's OK, but in practice it makes it harder to care at all about anything because none of it matters, everything will be reset soon. As a result any moral choices you face are much less significant.\n\nI'm not going to iterate each of the problems with the actual game play, there are countless other people doing a better job of that, but it suffices to say that the problems are numerous.\n\nOverall a massive disapointment",

"review": "Okay, let's start with Starfield, it's not Baldur's Gate 3, it's not No Man's Sky and it's not Mass Effect.\nStop comparing the games, it's useless. \nThey are all RPGs or have something to do with space but they are all trying something different.\nNobody complains that you can't fly the Normandy yourself in Mass Effect.\nNo one complains that in No Man's Sky there are little to no RPG elements and no facial animations at all.\nNo one complains that in Baldur's Gate 3 you can't go anywhere you want (i.e. where the story doesn't take you).\nGame developers have different goals of what the game should be and can't do everything.\nOtherwise you end up with whatever Star Citizen is.\nWhat Bethesda has said and shown is all here but what people have dreamed of is just not there.\n\nSo now to the game.\nThe game runs pretty well for me, for what it renders, stable 70 FPS.\nI'm in the upper percentile when it comes to my PC.\nBut I would also play Starfield with only 30 FPS - I did that in Fallout 4.\n\nGunplay: is good not many improvements to Fallout but it does what it should.\nGraphics: can be seen I don't know what people have. But I'm not someone who looks so much at the graphics.\nStory: the main story doesn't blow anyone away, but it brings you into the universe and that's all it needs to do.\nWhere Starfield gets really good in the story are the side quests, but that's already common practice with Bethesda.\nOther things: The ship building is great, I had a lot of fun building my ship and then being able to enter it and see it when it would launch.\n\nSo where there is good there is unfortunately also bad\nBugs: There are less than other Bethesda games at launch but still some.\nUnfortunately, there is a lot that repeats itself when you land somewhere on a planet.\nTo be honest, the planets should be much emptier.\nThe beginning of Starfield is not really thrilling you have to play 3-5 hours to get to the point where it clicks but once it has you it doesn't let you go so quickly.\n\nNow two things I often hear\nLoading screens: the game should and must be installed on an SSD. The longest loading screen I have seen was 3 seconds. So don't be like that, because there aren't that many loading screens.\n\nPrice: I also often hear that aaah 70 euros super expensive. Yes, it is if you only look at the price. If you consider that 60 Euros is the price of full-price games for a long time and you take inflation into account, then games should cost 90 Euros for a long time.\n \nAll in all I would give Starfield 83/100 the game has problems but it is pretty damn good.",

A spark of soul, creativity, or something along those vague lines.\n\nThe biggest positives I have for Starfield are that there are 2 questlines I found legitimately engaging (UC Vanguard and Sysdef) and I was able to have legitimate discussions with people about the outcomes of these quests as well as the dungeons they have you explore. The bigger of the two positives in my eyes is that a Bethesda game finally has PBR rendering. (unfortunately not in a game I want to play again)\n\nI have little to no desire to replay this game. I consider Fallout 4 to be a pretty mediocre game, but still always feel drawn back into that world. Starfield offers no such feeling for me; I feel I have explored everything there is to see in the world of the game; the same 4 repeated structures that dot every planet you come across.\n\nReally the biggest issue is that Io doesn't have any volcanoes though",

Lots to do, skills matter and need upgrading in a fun way, building of both ships and bases, and the whole of space to jump about in and be whatever you want without any other fucking human bean destroying your fun. A big hermit thumbs up. \n\nSO after 200 hrs and still lots to do here's and update.\nIt's your classic Bethesda RPG but in space, lotsa q's to do and stuff to explore. Most stuff is instanced like the dungeons etc in Skyrim/Fallout and that. There's a random procedural gen bit when you jump about on planets with poi's to explore and baddies to kill. There are many 'job' boards to get mission from depending of faction/company to keep you occupied as well. It has a similar scan and find things on planets like NMS but simplified. All in all I'm almost 180hrs and still having a blast and I've not touched ship building and outposts yet, lol.\n",

"review": "Long time enjoyer of older Bethesda games,\n\n61+ Hours in.\n\nHello Bethesda, I am usually quiet when it comes to reviews on games in general, \nbut I can't be silent when it comes to this whole situation.\n\nFirstly, Wow Bethesda, quite an ambitious game, I would be lying if I said I haven't had a little fun with this, as it can be, however this game does not even come close to your other titles.\n\n-you traded hand crafted worlds for procedural generation.\n-player freedom of choice for play styles traded with hand guided repetition. \n-story rich content for radiant mediocre fetch quests.\n-new and innovative combat each title for a re-skin of FO4's Combat.\n-Outpost building from FO4 for a overly complicated skill locked disaster\n\nThere is so much potential for this game, this idea on paper is excellent, we know you can do so much better.\n\nI have to ask, how did you come from one of the leading RPG studios to being the runt of the litter? I know at your HQ you must be thinking it's the fans fault and that we just can't appreciate what you do, but we can appreciate it when lots of love and care are put into your work, lately it all looks like money grabbing garbage, it has me thinking, has Microsoft got all the devs on a tight leash? forcing you all to sink as many micro-transactions and mediocrity as you can? \"Updating\" your older titles to attempt to keep up and stay relevant in the times? from a business standpoint, it's not working, you are pissing off the people who got you to where you are now. and before you say \"sorry you feel that way about our recent title/updates, there's so much to see, it's good trust us\", look at the game of the year awards for reference, There is a reason you do not have any awards this year.\n\nBethesda, please take note of what we are saying, stop replying to posts and being petty about how we are all wrong, sink that time and effort into improving on your work. I won't outright give up on you Bethesda, I know there's more potential from you, I won't stop playing your games, but for now, it feels like you've become soulless, that life and love that was once all around everything you did is gone and it's very disappointing.\n\nbottom note, if Microsoft has something to do with this, maybe they should reshuffle the Bethesda team like they did with 343.\n\nas it stands, potential buyers, wait until it's on sale, and Bethesda has admitted its issues and begun to fix them.",

All the game mechanics are surface level resulting in an extremely boring game.\n\n
Empty, Hollow, Boring
\nExploration is a complete joke as you quickly realize there is ZERO reason to land anywhere except to build an outpost to gather resources. The pre-generated encounters sprinkled around have such a laughably small library to select from that on your second exploration landing you are very likely to see repeats. I understand that real life planets would be barren, but this is a video game, thus it is supposed to be fun and interesting. Realism is a sad cope to explain this disaster.\n\nThe rest of the game is filled with terrible dialogue and mechanics from the early 2000's, which is sad and pathetic. You get tired of the shallow interactions and surface level ship building very quickly. Missions are boring and have no meaningful impact on the universe. The story is absolutely pathetic and consists of fetch-quests entirely. If this game was made by two guys as an indie developer for $15, it would be perfectly fine. For a AAA studio asking $70, one expects far more.",

"review": "This game has a huge potential and playing starts out great but it quickly turns to disappointment. The rewards for grinding are not there and there are too many situations in the game in which logic just goes out the window and it interferes with the enjoyment.\n\nGrinding is not rewarded. For example you can spend a lot a lot of time researching weapon mods and advanced projects but the ability to craft and improve a weapon is always eclipsed by whatever random perk is installed in things that fall from someone's dead hands like a \"refined\" Grendel or an \"advanced\" Grendel... which are all perks you can't access as a player because you can't create weapons or ammo. Same thing for the outposts. Great you can build an outpost and you can grind to unlock all the perks but even with the perks you're still \n* basically putting little contraptions all over the ground with no foundations for easy and satisfying snapping,\n* no help finding a spot that doesn't have an overlap with inaccessible ground, \n* none of the huge buildings like you find everywhere in the game so you can build practical stairs and organize your storage vertically\n\nLogic goes out the window and it doesn't make sense:\n* I find a landing site and a ship\n* I kill everyone on board and everyone everywhere in the vicinity\n* I try to fly the ship but learn I don't have the skills\n* I walk away\n* The ship takes off anyway and flies away??? Everyone was dead. There was nobody! Who is flying that ship!\n\nScenario #2\n* I find a landing site and a ship\n* I go on board and start killing people\n* Pilot of the ship takes off and we're off into space\n* I kill everyone on board\n* I sit down at the pilot seat and learn that I don't have the skills to fly the ship\n* Game *should* be over, I am a dumba** and out of luck. What can I do if I am alone on a ship that I can't fly? I should just stay there floating in space until I die\n* But not in Starfield! Instead I expertly not only pilot the ship but land it back on the planet without a scratch and magically appear back in my old ship\n\nBad Bethesda! Bad!",

"review": "I really wanted to play Starfield, but I knew that Bethesda often released half baked games and that I should wait 6 months. Unfortunately, I went with my impulses. \n\nProblem 1) I have a fairly good system with an RTX3070 with a 160hz monitor. Little did I know that Starfield has an exclusive relationship with AMD so DLSS is not supported in the game. It would take 4 mods to get the game working at its best on my machine. I usually don't use a lot of mods so the instructions to hotfix the game are hard to follow. Also, there is no \"mods\" folder in the Starfield set up and apparently all mods go to \"My Games\" which adds a new layer of problems. \n\nProblem 2) The reason I wanted to mod the game was because of performance issues. The game will freeze or stutter sometimes in combat or exploration. An NPC will start talking but the lips don't move until like halfway through the dialogue. Background sounds will sometimes go quiet which is especially annoying during combat. Lack of sound in combat is not only aesthetically displeasing but it can make detecting enemies more difficult. \n\nProblem 3) The robot. Vasco is good for carrying items (though you have to go through a longer than necessary dialogue set to access its inventory) and assisting in combat for the early game, but wow is it annoying. The thing always gets in your way. It jabbers constantly. And it jumps into combat if I'm trying to sneak up on enemies, leaving me open to enemy fire when I'm not expecting it. \n\nProblem 4) Lockpicking. I'm a long-time Bethesda gamer (started with Elder Scrolls 1). I know the drill of the little puzzles and lock picking processes that Bethesda likes to have. However, I cannot on my own figure out the lock picking system (I'm currently getting advice from friends and YouTube). I will eventually do so, but in the early game there are many locks to open. Even if I did figure it out, I can only find like 10 lock picks in the whole first mission. \n\nProblem 5) The inventory system. Bethesda usually has a decent inventory system in its games. Not in Starfield. It is disorganized and hard for me to navigate. Quickslots are helpful, but I often have to go through 2 or 3 menus before knowing what I have. I can't find how much weight I'm carrying unless I go to the inventory screen--very unhandy when in the middle of exploring and asking myself, \"Should I pick up more lead?\" I only find the answer during play when the extra weight encumbers me. I then have to drop stuff or talk to the blasted robot. Also, I had to look up how to access the cargo hold on the ship. It was not easy to do. \n\nProblem 6) The UI. Wow. It's choppy even for Bethesda. No logical organization. HUD icons not explained. The worst is the cockpit HUD where one of the two most important features, power management, is this tiny little row of icons at the bottom left of the screen. Tutorials on the different HUDs don't explain well at all. There's also very little tutorial on the different weapon systems, on flying, combat, or jumping between systems. Come on folks, we've been developing game UIs since the 90s. After 30 years I would think Bethesda could have made a clean UI that makes sense. \n\nProblem 7) The quest and NPCs. You are forced to join a faction in the first scenario without a better explanation than some alien object you acquire gives you a bad acid trip. There's no real understanding of why this faction would help more than going to a doctor. Once you get to the first planetside city, interacting with NPCs is really stiff. In the first bar you can hire some crew. You know that you can hire them because they are already wearing their work uniforms, are sitting in one area of the bar, and instead of having names they also have their job specialty listed before you talk with them. The bartender also somehow thinks I'm their friend and gives me a mission. Very wooden. \n\nStarfield has the potential to be a great game. But not in its current form at its current price. I am going to put it on the shelf for 3-6 months until either Bethesda or modders address some of these problems. I recommend that you wait as well.",

"review": "I sunk a ton of hours into this game. I leveled up my skills and set up outposts on a dozen planets to mine resources.... only to realize there was no point. Once you get a good ship and good weapons there isn't really much more to buy. You can kill everything in the game and I eventually realized it was a waste of time. My biggest complaint is how lifeless the worlds feel. I'm not talking about desolate planets, I'm talking about major cities. The NPC's have no personality. They dont even flinch when you stick a gun in their face. The missions are nothing to remember. \n\nI'll always remember stepping out of Vault 101 and discovering GNR Radio with Three Dog. I'll always remember being on the chopping block about to die when a dragon comes to destroy the town and I escape. Besthesda games have a lot of charm and character. Compelling stories and interesting quests. Unfortunately Starfield is not up to the same level that Fallout 3 or Skyrim were when they came out. In fact, other than the graphics, it is subpar in every way. The only thing I'll remember is how annoying the NPC companions are. Not only do they stand in front of your gun when trying to shoot, they complain non stop and want to talk about their feelings. Every few years I'll replay Skyrim and Fallout. I doubt I'll ever bother to redownload this huge, boring, game.",

      "review": "
Most Disappointing Game from Bethesda
\n
Everything Wrong With Betheda Game Design Since 2015
\nBelow are a few themed issues that came up over and over in my playthrough that I can't ignore.\nI'm sure many of the themes have come up in other reviews, but i'm giving my two cents on the topics.\n\n
Combat Mechanics and Balance
\nCombat in Starfield is almost a carbon copy of Fallout 4. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it comes with a number of mechanic and balance choices that make the game so tedious at times.\n\n
1.) Starfield Still Has Bullet Sponges for Bosses
\nWhen you look at a boss, you'll see two bars, one segmented white bar and a red bar below. Effectively, that white bar is the health bar of the boss, which refills after depleting, chunking the red bar down with each depletion. The kicker is that these boss fights aren't even hard, they're just time consuming.\n\n
2.) Nonsensical Weapon Balance
\nFor some reason, whenever you have two identical weapons, the full-auto version of the weapon deals less damage per round than semi-auto. The idea is that full-auto weapons deal less damage per individual hit, but deal more damage per second. The issue is that the time to kill is much faster with a semi-auto weapons with consecutive hits and pulling the trigger rapidly. Every single weapon I found that was full-auto was effectively worthless and needed to be converted into a semi-auto to maximize the damage. I guess the developers thought that it would be a great way to balance the guns, it's not. \n\nThere's also the weird aspect that some weapons are classified as \"Advanced\" which just means they're a higher level version of themselves. In Skyrim you could find a steel sword to replace your iron one. The improvement makes sense why it's dealing more damage. In Starfield, there isn't anything to denote why one AA-99 is more \"advanced\" than another AA-99. It's the exact same materials, barrel length, and caliber. It's nonsensical mechanic applied to Bethesda firearms that i wish they would stop doing.\n\n
3.) Brain-Dead Enemies
\nThis isn't really anything new, with the AI practically being the same since 2011. Its just surprising when i'm 70 hours in and finally have a group of enemies throw grenades at me for the first time.\n\n
Exploration and Research
\nI did enjoy exploring new worlds with unique fauna and flora. But there are three things that killed the enjoyment for me.\n\n
1.) It's a Jogging Simulator
\nThe distances between locations on foot are on average 1km way from each other. The only forms of transportation is fast travel (if you've visited that location), or running there manually. Fallout 4 had this same design philosophy, however even in Fallout 4 you had the option of taking a Vertibird if you were with the BOS. Starfield gives you nothing except your boostpack (which doesn't help you in horizontal travel all that much). A rover, quad, bike, or pack alien would have been awesome to add to a ship to deploy. But for some reason this wasn't implemented at release.\n\n
2.) Copy Paste Locations and Points of Interest
\nAfter a few world explored, it became painfully clear just how much Bethesda copied dungeons and points of interest to fill these worlds. I encountered the same robotic research facility at least eight times before I gave up exploring some of these locations. \n\n
3.) Pointless Scanning and Discovery
\nI really liked the idea of researching a planet and it's wonders. Sadly doing this give no reward outside experience and seeing what resources a planet has when making outposts. To add insult injury, when it comes to researching the fauna, it's easier to just kill any wildlife you find the second you see it. Doing so fills the research bar, gives you the resources and experience for killing them, and is sometimes safer. \n\n
Roleplay and NPCs
\nWhen it comes to other mechanics, roleplay, and NPCs. Starfield was a mix of indifferent and outright annoying.\n\n
1.) Forgettable Characters
\nWith 73 hours of gameplay, I can't list one named NPC in this game. Every character is so forgettable that I would forget that I even had a follower with me, or who I had a quest with. The robot that acts as your first follower was more memorable, and I can't even remember its name.\n\n
2.) Annoying Lock-picking System
\nI'm going to first give props to whoever came up with the Idea of a rotating puzzle mini-game for lock-picking. At low levels the mini-game isn't that bad, at higher difficulties not so much. The problem isn't that this mini-game is to hard at the higher difficulties, it just takes so much time to do. At higher levels, the mini-game is so time consuming that I stopped lock-picking; instead opting to use console commands to unlock containers with an expert or master lock.\n\n
I Tried
\nI genuinely gave this game my time with an open mind.\nFrom what I can remember, there were a few great moments in the game.\nHowever, the sheer number of moments that left me annoyed, indifferent, or bored outweigh those moments ten fold. If Bethesda doesn't actually listen to what's being relayed by their players, then their future projects will become failures.\n\n
To Bethesda: \"Keep It Simple Stupid\" isn't good advice when you're trying to engineer a game, its a good slogan if your intent is to stay in mediocrity. The Game Awards, a ceremony that recognizes and upholds creative and technical excellence in the global video game industry, Starfield failed to win a single award. Starfield isn't bad, but it's not excellent. It has all the trappings and design flaws of your current design philosophies and it shows. It's time to put the past behind you. The success of Skyrim and Fallout 4 in 2011 and 2015 won't keep your studio open forever.
",

It's like all their focus went into the graphics which is already limited by a 25 year old game-engine anyway so even the part they put the bulk of their effort in was never going to reach a high bar.\n\nAll the buggy shit that was endearing and goofy fun in their previous games aren't goofy or endearing when clearly no effort was made to make a game with any heart and soul in it.",

"review": "I very much enjoy my time with the game, but i can not really in good faith recommend Starfield to others in its current state. The game runs fairly fine barring few areas but the biggest problem is non of the sections of game play really blow me away at the moment. The ship building is good but limited to only exterior detailing which become very clear with the door and ladder placement in bigger ships. The outpost system feels like a much more limited settlement system, only have a small number of Habs in predetermined shapes. This is extra disappointing as the settlement system in fallout 76 was i feel one of the better improvements, and little of that system seems to have been passed over. I feel there is much less customization compared to previous Bethesda games. \nMy next biggest problem is the traveling, which feels very disjointed. There is very little above each planet, usually having one randomly chosen event and some asteroids or container. The massive amount of loading screens might not be nearly have been as bad if there was more to do in between them. I feel that the loading screens problem is a two fold issue between the game needing to run on Xbox and especially the Xbox s, and the aging creation engine not being able to handle much. \nThe shooting is fairly good, and most enemies are fine but many creatures and boss enemies are comically bullet spongy making the combat screech to a halt with these enemies. The AI is frankly not very good, but Bethesda's AI has never been very good. I don't know why they advertised better AI when it clearly has not really changed much. \nThe main story is not horrible but fairly boring beside a few sections. The faction quests on the other hand range for boring to very intriguing, and it feels as though most of the writing was invested in these quest lines. One of the advertised features was decision matter, which to be fair some do, but for the most part, there is only one way to complete a quest. You may sneak in instead of guns a blazin but in the end its the same ending to the quest. The most you might get is a different news story. There are many random events that were very good though these seemed to come fairly rarely in my play though. Overall, the world is very interesting and a lot of the world building is good. Most of the planets out side any quest areas are very bland, which is why vehicles should not be in game as there is nothing there to really do( if creation engine could even handle vehicles).\nTo sum up, Starfield is an ok game, but just ok. It does nothing that is amazing and a few things just good. On top of that there is a lot that is very bad and needs to be rebuild from the ground up. I cant recommend at the moment as there is too much that just feels half baked, probably because of technical problems, but still really effect the feel of the game. There is stuff to enjoy, sometimes you will run into a quest that is fun but eventually the problems rear their ugly heads again. I truly hope that Bethesda will fix these problems but im skeptical. I worry that Xbox is pulling a little harder on Bethesda than they are open about. \n",

"developer_response": "Hi,\nThank you for taking the time to leave a review for Starfield!\nWe appreciate you taking the time to provide your review and sorry to hear that you did not enjoy your time in Starfield. Below we have addressed some of your concerns and issues regarding the outposts, fast travel, loading screens, enemies, and emptiness.\n\nOutposts:\nOutposts are one of the most versatile parts of Starfield that will help with long term play of the game. An outpost serves as both a place to hang your spacesuit between jumping between systems and a resource gathering opportunity. Each outpost has the ability create a stockpile of resources that will fuel the improvement of weapons, spacesuits, ships, and outposts. It will also create a comfortable place of your choosing to spend a moment catching your breath between fighting spacers, scanning rocks, and running from aggressive alien creatures.\nGetting started with Outposts: https://beth.games/3SPMG3k\nOutpost tips and tricks: https://beth.games/3MTdgVA\n\nFast Travel:\nGiven the immense size of Starfield, we felt it made more sense to be able to use your Grav Drive to jump to other solar systems. The option to fly freely among planets is still there, and you can travel from one planet to another and land without needing to open your map if you use your scanner. However, for an expedition like solar system traversal, jumping is necessary. Remember that fast travel also has its perks as you can do so quickly when trying to complete quests and will always be given visual of your ship launching and landing, thus being able to appreciate all the little details that make your customized ship look unique.\n\nLoading Screens:\nWhile there may be loading screens in between fast travelling, just consider the amount of data for the expansive gameplay that is procedurally generated to load flawlessly in under 3 seconds. We believe that shortcoming will not hinder our players from getting lost in the world we created.\n\nEnemies:\nThe harder the difficulty, the harder enemies will be to kill. Each level sees an increase in enemy health, damage, and quality of items. However, the higher the difficulty you are playing on, the better items you will receive as a drop. Since enemies will have better equipment, they will be dropping better equipment.\n\nEmptiness:\nThe intention of Starfield's exploration is to evoke a feeling of smallness in players and make you feel overwhelmed. You can continue to explore and find worlds that do have resources you need or hidden outposts to look through.\n\nTo provide feedback for Starfield, please feel free to submit your feedback using this form here: https://beth.games/46e5g8E\nThanks again and we hope you return to your journey through space soon!\nWarm regards,\nBethesda Customer Support"

"review": "Starfield at its core is an incredible next-gen RPG. But it's also a Bethesda title, which means you can expect a certain goofiness and a lack of polish to accompany it. There's plenty of valid criticisms such as a lack of some modern features like an FoV slider, a slow UI, no ground vehicles and long animations.. But if those things aren't game breaking to you (and you have no problem installing a few quality of life mods to fix them), you'll have a great time.\n\nWhile this is similar in many ways to Bethesda's previous RPGs, it is also vastly different. Not every single planet or moon in the game has a meticulously handcrafted settlement. And if you are expecting it to be like No Mans Sky with the ability to seamlessly land, take off and explore a whole planet you will be disappointed. But the care that has been given to the characters, questlines, visuals, music, sandbox and the overall immersion of the world makes this one of the best games I've played in a long time. \n\nAs for the story, if you only focus on the main quest you probably won't feel that satisfied. There's technically no wrong way to play this game but the real magic is in the side quests, factions, ship building and discovery. The game starts out rough but if you can make it past the first few hours you'll get hooked. The more you play, the better the game becomes.",

"review": "After 33 hours of playing the game, finished the main quest and did one New Game Plus run, confidently I can say I can't recommend this game, its not like other games you can say: \"In this current state, I can't recommend\", we know Bethesda doesn't fix their games, so, this is the product players got and now its the task for the modders to fix all.\n\nStory:\nThe story is just an excuse to try to set up the player for the New Game+ loop. It has a lot of ChatGPT AI Generated moments and there is no real buildup. The final boss fight can be ended in an anticlimatic dialogue option that even a player with 0 points invested on social skills can beat. \n\nGameplay Loop - New Game+:\nAfter the New Game+ loop starts, you are teleported without any items more than a new ship and a space suit, you may think you will get to play a second story with your newfound purpose. Well, nope. You can just select to replay or skip the previous main quest and you are given two main quest, one of them optional. The mandatory main quest just points you to every main item you need to get to progress, a process that can take 20 to 30 minutes depending the locations, since there is a chance of 90% you are not getting to fight any resistance to get the items. Then after getting the items, you need to replay the last mission that has a Destiny 2 raid vibe of waves of enemies, that can take 15 minutes or less depending on your skills. \n\nThe ship increases its stats up to the sixth loop of New Game+.\nThe space suit increases its stats up to the tenth loop of New Game+.\nThe powers increases its stats up to the tenth loop of New Game+.\n\nGameplay Loop - Getting Artifacts (Main Quest Items):\nThere is six artifacts you need to get via exploration. You get pointed where it is, you land, you run to it, get it, then return to the ship. There is three variants of this loop:\na. Unhabited Cave: You enter, get the artifact and leave.\nb. Previously Habitated Cave: You enter, destroy three level six turrents, get the artifact and leave.\nc. Cave inside an Outpost: You enter, kill ten to fifty enemies, get the artifact and leave.\n\nAfter the third artifact (Unless its New Game+) you will be safe, after that you have a chance to get attacked for a Level 30 mob, easily killable.\n\nConsidering this is part of the New Game+ loop, you are going to repeat this 60 times.\n\nGameplay Loop - Getting Powers (Missable Content even if its Main Quest):\nThere is 24 powers. You get pointed where they are by a crew member, you enter, you get it and then leave.\nSame as the Artifact loop, there is a chance a Level 30 mob will try to kill you.\n\nThe way to get the powers consist on floating at zero gravity and walk trough some floating lights. There is no boss fight or dungeon attached to them.\n\nOn the New Game+ loop, the powers get a slight buff for each new iteration. If you are going to the full completitionist of this (not even worth an achievement to make people do it), you may have to repeat this same thing 240 times.\n\nGameplay Loop - Factions:\n\nThere is four factions in the game. So, even if you don't finished one of them or didn't joined anyone on your first playtrough. You can use one of them to do it if you want to get the illusion every New Game+ loop is different.\n\nGameplay Loop - Outpost, Properties and Ships:\n\nThe futility of the New Game+ loop makes this a waste of time, nothing is transfered to the new run.\n\nFinal Thoughts:\nOverall, the game feels biggers that should be and downsizing it a 80% and focus to do a better story and better UI would fix up to make a 7/10 game instead of the 4/10 game filled with barren lands that is now.\n\n\n\n\n",

Despite being the most stable on release title Bethesda has made, I was very underwhelmed and quickly lost interest. \n\nThe exploration is shallow and unrewarding. Unlike No Man's Sky where you can fully explore every pixel in every solar system, Starfield has you fast travel between controlled areas around and on planets, leading you to feel bound and constricted. The lack of any ground based vehicles only further cements this feeling. It’s nuts they didn’t include even one for exploration. \n\nThis feeling of limitation carries over to the spacecraft, which is essentially an over glorified storage container and fast travel mechanic. So spending anytime in the shipbuilder is a waste of time.\n\nFor $69.99 this game is insulting. I highly recommend getting No Man's Sky over Starfield, it offers more than everything Starfield lacks and costs $10 less. The only notable things NMS could learn from SF is improving gunplay and adding shipbuilding.\n\nIf you are absolutely set on getting this game, wait for a sale.",

Even the guy who gives you a ship had me wanting to side with the bad guys instantly. \n\nMade it through the canned hunts and to the org. The city was built by someone that escaped a loony bin. It made no sense and was obviously built to be another time sink. \n\nI decided to randomly screenshot to a nearby planet and it was obvious that I had already seen this base . Quite remarkable considering what the odds of 2 out of 2 bases being exactly alike.\n\nAt this point I quit. 6.5 hours of my life wasted by uninspiring characters, locations, and obvious time sinks to make up for cookie cutter content.\n\nTLDR: As wide as the Atlantic ocean, but only 1\" deep....and as an added bonus every port looks alike and you get to enjoy none of the cruise.\n\nI'm sure it will be argued that I never gave the game a chance. I counter that 6.5 hours was plenty long enough to see the lipstick smeared on this giant pig. 6.5 hours I will never be able to get back of my limited time on earth is valuable to me. I spent the money, I lost the time. No excuse will counter that. period.\n\n",

Nothing in this game could possibly redeem it.\n\n+ The quick loot takes up the whole right side of the screen, has significant empty space, and the text is unreadibly small.\n+ The health bar takes up less space than the day-night indicator and only changes color at the 25% health margin. It's also in the corner of the screen, barely visible, and shrinks TOWARDS the center of the screen, instead of away from the center.\n+ The inventory as a whole.\n+ The UI is the world's most boring stark white with not a single frill, flair, or stylization. Bars, lines, circles.\n+ CONSTANT PRESSING AND HOLDING that slows down EVERYTHING significantly.\n\nSimply comparing the UI to Fallout 4 shows how much of a step back it is.\nThe top mods on Nexus are already nothing but performance and UI changes.",

"review": "So my main problem with this game. The main story is a bunch of fetch quests with a few of actual fun or interesting missions staggered throughout it. The main story is lacking, and that's fine, if it wasn't for the game play loop being run across a barren planet with copy pasted points of interest. The previous work done by Bethesda had no recurring dungeons and each area felt unique. During my time playing, I have felt bored at the amount of little bits of drawn out time wasting methods to keep people invested in the game(i.e. Fast travel animations into load screens, Researching new upgrades requiring repeated ventures into more walking to places to unlock another thing that needs more research, Encumbrance, Shops not having enough money to sell the stuff that makes you encumbered so you have to hop systems till you get rid of it all, Horrible outpost system with very poor implementation of a automation game, and more). \nThe game feels like it wanted to be games like Elite Dangerous, No Mans Sky, Satisfactory, and Fallout/Skyrim while only bringing the feature of customizing your ship. These games mentioned do have their own appeals. Elite Dangerous is gives you an immersive experience of flying a ship through space whether you want to do space battles, be a cargo pilot, or just explore the planets the game does all of that well. No Mans Sky excels at providing a universe to explore with a less realistic approach then Elite Dangerous but manages to do it all pretty well. Satisfactory is a game about making a thing to make another thing and it too does this well despite being an early access game. Do i need to talk about Fallout/Skyrim? Everyone and their mother knows something about the games.\nI have talked about these games as examples of games that I feel Starfield tries to imitate and has been made worse for it. The game shows a lack of creativity that I've seen in past Bethesda titles. Either I've been playing better games or Bethesda doesn't have the same passion they have shown for the games they have made.",

I'm running a top-of-the-line PC and I'm failing to hit 60FPS in 90% of the areas I've explored so far, I'm lucky to hit 30FPS during combat. "review": "
Starfield
\n\nIt was a gamble about whether or not I was to enjoy this game especially when I'm not big into space-related kind of games. I enjoy it. But of course, it being a Bethesda title, it has its quirks where I'd argue this game might feel more of a seven or even eight out of ten rating. It's not perfect but it's fun.\n\nTL;DR Decent Game and was Overhyped, The Beginning is a Slow Burn - takes a few hours to get into it, Flexibility for who you want to play as in the game, The Story is Mid - but you can avoid it if you wish to. Feels much like a Bethesda title with decent combat but silly AI - similar to Fallout 4 but with a space approach. Optimization is questionable, the Modding scene is already 'taking off' for Starfield.\n\nThis game has a slow burn, it takes a few hours. When I first played this game, I was bummed out by how slow and boring it was. I did submit a refund ticket during the first hour. However, I canceled it gave it another shot, and just forced myself through it. I'm glad I did. Those few hours became seven hours straight with the amount of time I got lost in the game. The story is alright, but nothing too impressive - you can even avoid it once the game opens up to you.\n\nThis game is your average Bethesda game. It's nothing much different than they have done before. So if you're expecting a 'No Mans Sky' exploration, unfortunately, that's not the case. I agree it is quite a bummer how this was displayed and how approaching planets are nothing but short-loading screens or quick traveling. It sucks and is one of the biggest points of the game that bums me out the most. This game is very 'Fallout 4-like but in space and does feel a bit more polished. I do love the gun designs for the most part - and the fact that 'Old Earth' weapons or modern weapons to clarify are canon in this universe too. No Pipe weapons, so that's also a big positive.\n\nThere are lots and lots of planets to explore. But do mind that some might have similarities to others as they're usually generated if you don't land at a specific point on the planet. A lot of these planets are to gather resources and at times you will run into quests with marked areas you can travel to. These planets will also have their elemental hazards and of course, be important to be geared before going out on foot. As with any Bethesda game, there are lots of quests and flexibility that you can do for your character. You can be a bounty hunter, or raider n' hijack aircraft in space, be a smuggler, and bring in illegal goods. Or like my current playthrough, be a space cowboy!\n\nCharacter creation is pretty good, though I don't stick much time into it. But you can lose some time into it. Ship creating is a huge part of the game that you can simply lose time into. As people have started doing, you can re-create your favorite ships from Movie, Game, etc. to the best of your abilities. The space fight can be fun but can also be hard at times. It's important to know your ship and upgrade its weapons as time goes on.\n\nI do enjoy the aesthetic, sound, and design. Graphically I think it's decent, I would much rather gameplay be prioritized than graphics, to be honest. But this game might not be everyone's interest by how it looks and how it plays. You might see some similarities that they added to this game from older Bethesda titles as well. But I do wish they did something with the UI.\n\nPerformance is quite iffy with this game. I have a 3080 12GB, a Ryzen 9 5900X, and 32GB, and running this at my native 4K resolution. Tweaking shadows down, putting FSR on, and 65% resolution scaling, I was able to get 40fps and up to 60fps average depending on the area. Interiors definitely can reach my 120Hz. I think optimizations need to be made here. There are mods already in the works for this. At least from what I know, people with even better specs are having issues, so something is going on here.\n\nSpeaking of modding, this game will more than likely save the day again for Bethesda as there are already over 300 mods active on Nexus right now. For now, it's a start, but some fixes on the modding pages can be essential. FOV for example is quite gross in the game, upping it up to 100 FOV is much better on my display.\n\n
Conclusion
\n\nOverall you could say Starfield is more of a 'mid' to a decent game, but not the best. It was overhyped than what it was supposed to be. I know for myself I'm disappointed in how some of the space exploration is nothing more than a quick travel hub. But I get it, it's Bethesda. I think expecting big things like 'No Mans Sky' level is a bit too much.\n\nThe biggest point for me why I'm rating it positive is because I have no shame to admit I liked Fallout 4's combat and gameplay overall with the modding support behind it. Starfield is just that and feels better. Yes, you're going to be dealing with bullet sponge enemies, that's the way Bethesda games are. But the modding scene as always for Bethesda games will be there and already are fixing how the game functions.\n\nFor bugs, over my 20 hours of gameplay, I am surprised I have not run into much aside from one 'Soft Lock' situation with a side quest. Other than that I have not had crashes or anything like that. Bethesda miracle.\n\n(This review is kinda messy as I didn't proofread so I'll update it later.)",

"review": "After having spent some more time with the game, I feel the need to update my review.\n\nTo sum things up, Starfield is a complete failure of game design. Bethesda doesn't seem to have paid any attention to the evolution of game development outside of their own outdated principles, and quite frankly, I don't think they understand their own design and why it worked in the past either.\n\nStarfield tries to be Skyrim/Fallout in space with the same old systems from back then and it doesn't work for multiple reasons.\n\n===EXPLORATION===\n\nExploring the world in Skyrim comes naturally as part of the main game loop. As you progress through the world, you'll stumble over interesting things off the beaten path that you're free to explore now or at a later time. Starfield doesn't do this as it is much more fragmented. Exploration is done in two ways: The starmap and on foot on a planet's surface.\n\nThe starmap is navigated by selecting which system you want to visit, and then watching a loading screen. If it's an unexplored system multiple jumps away, you'll have to select one system at a time, and watch a loading screen each time. There is zero exploration to be done in space, but sometimes the game will throw random encounters at you that don't matter. If you actually want to do any exploration on a planet, you'll have to actively go out of your way, because the game will not invite you to do so like Skyrim does.\n\nExploring a planet on foot is more interesting, and you're bound to run into more interesting stuff, but not by a whole lot. Most planets are barren with nothing to do on them and have to be explored on foot. Imagine exploring a planet in Mass Effect 1, but you can't use any vehicle, and the planets haven't been resized to accommodate for it. But hey, you're free to run around and find the same copied landmarks and empty caves as you please! The planetary map is also... really bad. It's so poorly detailed, the only things you can really make out on it are the icons for cities or points of interests. You can't really use it to navigate anything, and if you're trying to find a specific store in town... well, good luck, because cities are huge and there are almost no signs either!\n\nFinally, navigation points/markers and UI elements are incredibly invasive. You will always be pointed towards the door/item/character you need to interact with to progress your current quest. After a while I felt like a slave to the navigation marker rather than encouraged to explore and find my own way.\n\n===GAMEPLAY===\n\nBasic player movement just feels bad. You have 100% air control, meaning you can stop and start on a dime when airborne, which feels extremely off and unnatural. When sprinting, your side movements have no acceleration/deceleration, which makes movement feel extremely jittery, but at least it doesn’t happen when you’re walking around normally. At least the gunplay feels surprisingly adequate for a Bethesda game.\n\nSpace travel is limited to fast travel and combat, which is extremely barebones and underdeveloped. I almost wish it didn’t exist in the game at all. Your ship is sluggish and unless you’re fighting in an asteroid field there will be zero cover. It’s a DPS race. It’s always a DPS race. If there are multiple ships involved you just have to pray the enemy will randomly target your allies instead of you because there is nothing you can do to avoid damage.\n\n===WRITING===\n\nI can't tell whether this or Borderlands 3 is the worst written AAA game I've ever played, but they're both certainly trying for the title.\n\nDialogue options are garbage. Yeah, there will be a quirky joke here and there, but most of my options are limited to one of three alternatives: 1: I want to kiss the ass of this NPC. 2: I want to be a complaining asshole. 3: I want more information about the current subject matter before choosing option 1 or 2.\nThe persuasion minigame feels exactly like a minigame and nothing like an actual conversation. You’ll feed the NPC specific lines and the NPC will respond with dull, generic phrases based on whether you succeeded or not that oftentimes make no contextual sense.\n\nThe story is horrible. The leaps in logic is beyond conspiracy theory levels of stupid and a lot of the lines make no sense. During a mission I saved a woman who was being attacked by spacers. 20 minutes later she felt bad and wanted to convince me that she’s actually not a bad person, even though she killed the one guy who tried to murder her when we first met. She conveniently ignores the 30 or so people we slaughtered together during THE SAME MISSION between then and now.\n\n===THE REST===\n\nStarfield is filled with systems that look interesting on paper, but are ultimately underdeveloped and/or doesn't mesh with the rest of the game.\n\nStarting with the good stuff, ship building is actually quite enjoyable and allows players plenty of freedom and flexibility to build some crazy and varied ships that can then be explored in first person. It's just such a shame that space travel is so underdeveloped. \n\nThere is also no proper onboarding for how ship building actually works, and don't get me started on planetary outposts. I had to google how to do that because the game doesn't even begin to mention how that's supposed to work, what you need, how to initiate it etc.\n\nThe game is also extremely buggy and unoptimized. It's a Bethesda game, so it shouldn't surprise you, but it bears mentioning anyway.",

"review": "TLDR: Come back at the end of 2024 once official mod support is out.\n\nI'll start off with the positives: it's a bethesda game. There are lots of NPCs with lots of storylines, and most of the side quests are not bad. The main story is alright too. One thing I did like was the ground combat; it is overall an evolution of Fallout 4 combat to something a bit more modern, its good enough to be consistently fun. Digipicking is also great, and probably one of the best lockpicking minigames in a AAA game out there. Character voices are also actually decent this time around, and not bethesda's usual comedy. Facial animations aren't amazing, but they're OK. Game's got good visuals and gun models look incredible. Music is OK, nothing I would listen to in my own time. There are also an uncharacteristically small amount of bugs; I guess that Microsoft QA money really came through.\n\nBut here are the negatives: it's a bethesda game, yet this is the worst exploration in any bethesda game ever made. Every planet is just a desolate wasteland with procedural generated points of interest that has absolutely zero interesting lore to uncover. This might sound like Fallout at first, but at least you can explore ruins of old world buildings and locations in those games. In Starfield, there is literally nothing for miles on end. If you're lucky, you might stumble across one special planet or two but with the sheer volume of planets with no life or nothing special on them, these are few and far between. Some of the cities you get to a bit later are nice in their own ways, but the fact that the game is built to have you fast travel everywhere makes you not give a damn about anywhere that you go to. No iconic locations, no memorable encounters; any joy of discovery or exploration has, fittingly, been sucked into the vacuum of dead space. I love space games and sci fi, so the fact that an open world (open galaxy?) somehow managed to make me feel bored in its world is quite an achievement.\n\nThe space combat is unfathomably terrible. Out of any space combat i have ever played, this is without a doubt the worst rendition of it I have ever had the misfortune to experience. Ship control is laggy, core systems and basic functions are locked behind perks that you have to put points into to unlock for no reason at all, the ship builder is extremely cumbersome and frustrating to use, and enemy ship AI is completely braindead and will just do the same looping maneuvers in every single encounter at every single level. The ship combat is so bad, it is the single driving force that made me want to uninstall the game.\n\nThe perk system was an interesting twist; to unlock new ranks, you have to complete a simple challenge (e.g., kill X many enemies with a rifle. complete X persuasion checks) which I personally did not mind, but can see why people would not like. What I did mind was how the most basic and fundamental gameplay elements are locked behind these perks. Lockpicking is a perk. Using your ship's thrusters is a perk. Pickpocketing is a perk. Persuasion is a perk. SHOWING THE STEALTH BAR IS A PERK?? It is beyond ridiculous how many absolutely basic and core mechanics for the game are locked behind this system, and with 5 ranks in every perk and other tiers only unlockable by putting in points in to the previous tier, you have to choose if you want to have basic gameplay features or if you want to have fun making a build until you are around level 20.\n\nI've put 40 hours into this game so far and I can barely remember anything I did. Starfield is, in very few ways, an improvement on some things bethesda has got wrong before... Yet somehow, in many ways, takes massive steps back in things they have usually got right before. There is so little to enjoy in this game compared to how hard it makes it to have fun that it's just not worth the effort. Come back at the end of 2024 when modders, yet again, manage to fix bethesda's mess. \n\n\n",

Quest NPCs flying up into the sky, the outpost system is mostly broken.\nThe Optimization is terrible, not including DLSS 3.0 into the game really hurts it. Mods can fix that, but they should not. There are many who will play the game and enjoy it and use mods to fix quite a few of the problems. This is an AAA Company and game; you should not need to rely on mods to fix the Problems.\nDid the Devs even play the game and play it on all Platforms?\nYeah, be very aware of this if you want to buy it, you might have a great time, you might not.\nSome Quests are good, others not so much, in general it’s an OK game. but just that.\n",

"review": "This is a difficult one to review. It is essentially Skyrim in space. So expect a typical Bethesda game in a Sci-Fi-theme.\n\nA few points I could think of:\n\nPro:\n- It is the first Bethesda game which I played more than just ~4 hours and I really enjoy. So it got me hooked, that's pretty rare actually.\n- It seems to be pretty polished (for 2022/2023 standards) and I have not encountered any major bugs or glitches.\n- I like the story and side quests. The voice acting is great too.\n- Beside the main questing, there is a variety of different stuff you can do - building bases or your own ships, decorating your homes, farming resources.\n- There is mod support.\n\nCons:\n- The graphics feel outdated. Classic for Bethesda, but that doesn't make it more beautiful.\n- Given the graphic, the performance is a bit disappointing. I get around ~50-60 with a 3080 Ti without any mods on 2k ultrawide. Comparing it to other games, using better game engines, I tend to get more FPS with way better visual quality.\n- It is missing the superior AI upscaling tech DLSS from NVIDIA. It's especially disappointing, as AMD claimed there were no contractual reasons to not have it. It's fine to have AMD's tech implemented too (competition is good), but I'd have expect to also provide DLSS for NVIDIA users to get most out of their cards.\n\nNeutral:\n~ A lot, lot of loading screens. Really, a lot. You can't land/lift to/from a planet yourself, you only get a cutscene and loading screens afterwards. You majorly use fast travel anyway. I got used to it and enjoy doing the quests.\n~ Some menu elements (loading screen, main menu, inventory, cutscenes) are not in a 21:9 format. However the game, more importantly, is.\n\nSummary\nI think it is a good game if someone enjoys a classic Bethesda game like Skyrim in a Sci-Fi setting game. However it might have been a bit over-hyped and wrong expectations set. For example, I don't think there's much \"space exploration feeling\" with all these loading screens.\n\nWhy positive?\nWhile I think it has some rough edges, it delivered a solid day-1 game experience, hooked me for dozens of hours already and nonetheless, I'm having a good time. And that's what matters to me most.\n\nYou don't agree? Write it in your diary because I don't care.",

"review": "Starfield delivers what is essentially a pretty Standard BGS rpg experience, set in space. Those who were calling it Skyrim-in-Space or Fallout-in-Space hit the nail quite square on the head. Starfield just does it on a significantly more massive scale than any of their previous games. \n\nTo me, this is a positive thing. No other sub-genre has given me more hours of entertainment value per title than the Bethesda RPG's. And, in the case of Starfield, they deliver this on a much grander scale than any of their previous titles. The attention to detail in the environments is phenomenal, if you take the time to visit and really explore the locals.\n\nOutpost (base) building and ship customization, managing your crew, crafting and upgrading your suits and weapons, gathering resources, exploring and surveying planets, running cargo missions, fighting off pirates, and more are all available to keep you entertained. There's so much to do that the biggest challenge I've found is in deciding what to do next. Yes, \"Choice overload\" is the biggest downside of this game, imo.\n\nPerformance is, I would say, the game's second biggest downside. On my rig, I locked fps to 45 and have experienced smooth, stutter free gameplay. 45 is obviously not a very ideal fps, but it does work and it's not particularly a problem. Regardless though, I would definitely subtract points from the game for not performing better.\n\nOverall, I would highly recommend this game to anyone who enjoys a BGS rpg. If you liked Skyrim or Fallout 3 or 4, you will probably very much like Starfield. But if you didn't, you probably will not. And honestly, I don't see how anyone would have expected it to be any different than that.\n\nUpdate: After 400 hours of play, I just wanted to update and say that my review stands. I'd give the game a 7/10 as it is delivered out of the box. \"Fun, but has some issues\". But with mods, ini tweaks, and console bat file tweaks, it's a solid 10/10. I've had more fun with the game than any game released in a VERY long time.",

I kept trying to push ahead to the \"good\" part, but have to call it quits on this game and move on.\n\nI think the Bethesda model needs refreshing. "review": "I have now played this game for 200+ hours and experienced 1 full playthrough and a bit of new game +, here is my opinion now. \n\n--------- TLDR---------\n-Weakest main quest in any Bethesda game. A lot of repetitive fetch questing.\n-Loads of dialogue that all have the same outcome and a lot of time you get the exact same reply from the npc word of word in 3 out of 5 options in the dialogue tree.\n-Very immersion breaking random chatter in the world where an npc turns to look at you and start spew random facts about the area they live in.\n-Game lacks a lot of ingame options to tweak graphics etc\n-Extremely poor performance on high end hardware, solved with a mod but that is not a pass.\n-Loads of loading screens everywhere.\n-Exploration is very repetitive and limited to cells you can’t travel between without traveling with ship.\n--No seamless travel anywhere. Loading screens to do anything. To and from planet surface? Cutscene. Travel between two planets? Cutscene.\n\nAll in all I think this game disappoint in so many areas because you see the potential of what it could be, but just isnt because the designes are lazy. They have spent way too much time into recording dialogue that bloats the illusion of choice. Voice acting is ok but would probably be better if they got to actually act out any meaningful dialogue. You see so many things in this game that could be amazing if they were worked on a bit more and you end up thinking “I hope mods can do this later on” and when you think that about the entire game, I just have to admit to myself that while I enjoyed the game, it is ultimately disappointing.\n\nIf it were not for the performance issues i would give the game a 6 out of 10.\nCurrently a 4 out of 10.\n\nMain Story i find it to be one of the worse ones bethesda has done, it picks itself up a bit but it is a chore until the end. I don't want to write too much as to not spoil anything, but it is a very repetitive quest line and i find it to be the weakest point about the game other than performance.\nThe rest of the games various storylines and side quests are pretty fantastic though.\nHowever there is something I need to say, there is extremely little you do in the game that have any kind of impact and very few of the things you pick in dialogues that changes the outcome. Very often you will be presented with 4 dialogue options where 3 will have the same voiceline replied to you and some times when you decide to attack, someone else might just take that final choice away from you and refuse to let you engage them in combat. Ultimately the dialogue system is very shallow with a lot of extra dialogue for no reason. \n\nThe game will handhold you the entire way from start to finish, there is no running around and figuring things out on your own, if the game wants you to solve a mystery, it will take you from a, to be then take you to c, and instead of letting you take the clues from around you to solve the mystery, you instead get a popup box with a text that tells you the solution to the mystery instead.\n(I have only found one place so far where this was not true and you had to actually read stuff to get an alternative solution that is better than the two alternatives you are presented with that had no handholding or hints in the UI at all.)\n\nVoice acting is nothing to write home about its pretty average.\nVisually its pretty OK, not great but not bad either.\n\nGameplay is pretty fantastic, its very much fallout in space, completely unleashed and just straight up fun probably what I enjoyed the most in this game. Just straight up mess around with different weapons and killing enemies.\n\nThat said the variety of enemies are very low. Most of the randomly generated creatures have similar combat styles which is not surprising and the main monsters and enemy npcs in the game have a very small variety of each that you will meat over and over through the entire game.\n\nI find the weapon variation to be a littlebit slim, specially the laser weapons. i found none of them interesting and basically stuck to ballistic weapons from beginning to end.\n\nSame could be said about space suits.\n\nOutfits have a fair variety to choose from, not all equal but there are choices at the very least.\n\nSpaceship and space combat was great in my experience and i really enjoyed the experience, there are lots of things to play around with here in term of weapon loadouts and approach to combat.\nThat said like the rest of the game its not very deep and most of the time you can just straight up skip encountering any of it but just fast traveling everywhere. Feels like a very optional thing they just tacked on the game.\n\nI love open world exploration in games. Take any of the new Assassins Creed games up to valhalla. Insanely interesting beautiful worlds to explore. Ark survival evolved, it has lots of maps and I love exploring them. Baldur’s gate 3. Cyberpunk. Skyrim. Fallout 4. Even Fallout 76. Elite Dangerous.\nI love them all. \nBut starfield is just straight up boring. Very much like no man’s sky you see the same buildings dotted around everywhere. And I mean everywhere. You can travel to the most barren out of reach planet or moon in the game, and you will see the same amount of buildings and the same npcs. Dungeons are ofcourse the same too. The amount of times I have encountered the same dungeons with the same notes and items inside it is insane. I lost count. Likewise the places you go to are open world to a degree, but they smaller instances with a boundary. Like Elite dangerous and No man’s sky I do appreciate that there are objectives and rewards for exploring, but unlike the two above, there are no seamless travel anywhere. You can’t drive around on a planet as you will reach boundaries and you do not have a vehicle to drive around with. Unlike ED and NMS You can’t pass from one area to the other because each area is randomly generated when you land in it based on its biomes and seed. Landing and taking of are cutscenes and the same goes traveling between planets. That takes us to one of the things I really hate about this game:\n\nThere are quite a lot of loading screens and you get more based on how you play the game. It does however let you focus on whatever mission you are doing and let you travel to some of these locations skipping 3+ loadingscreens by using a fast travel button inside of the quest log, i am very glad about that, but at the same time the game does get a bit mindless and it comes back to the handholding you through everything in the game.\n\nPerformance is without a doubt completely garbage, absolute disaster. and because of this, the game get dragged down to a 4 out of 10 for me. If it were not for the DLSS mods the game would be virtually unplayable for me (and i have friends who decided not to buy or refund because of these issues), i have a fairly high end pc by todays standard so there is no excuse for this game to run this poorly.\n(Also Todd, its not technical innovation if its just a hindrance to many, specially if so many other games does the same thing that works, looks and performs better. Maybe it is innovation in term of the engine you are using, but maybe its time to maybe see if the engine is holding you back.)\n\nI hope i can come back and change my opinion on some of these things as patches comes out and some of these performance issues are fixed, but i am not going to hold my breath, bethesda has a very poor track record of fixing performance issues outside crashes for any of their games.\n\nThis game also just have straight up problems that would take years to fix and I doubt they would do it.\n\nThis time i have had enough and i won't let it slide and just go \"Well with this mod i can play fine\".\nThis was an awful release and it will make me reconsider buying the next games when they come down the line, i am frankly tired of the state games releases in these days.",

"review": "Skyrim in space. Great game but do yourself a favor and tweak the ini files and add mods to make it even better. \n\nBethesda game studios has questionably left out some graphic settings like dlss, hdr, brightness, contrast, lack of field of view (FOV) slider and even lock the inventory UI and spaceship battles at 30 fps. Photo mode doesn't even have an ultrawide support which is annoying for me since I have a 3440x1440p monitor and I like to take screenshots a lot (you will too once you see the breathtaking scenery in this game). So yes, you need to tweak the StrarfieldPrefs.ini and create a StarfieldCustom.ini files to customize the graphic settings to make your gameplay experience as it should have been. \n\nDoes this make this a bad game? No. In fact gameplay and main storylines are amazing. As of this moment I have around 62 hours of gameplay since early access and I've only hit around level 25. Start is admittedly boring but then again what RPG isn't? Once you hit around level 5 is when things start getting interesting. Don't forget to get security perk, which is the equivalent of lockpicking/hacking, and persuasion perk at the start. This makes your starfield life easier. \n\nOf course this is still based on Bethesda's old engine so expect a lot of the bugs that you encounter in their old games present. The first initial hours I haven't encountered any bugs at all but once I've hit around 30 hours of gameplay is when everything came out. Graphic glitches. Ragdoll physics is still the same. I've seen enemies fly into the stratosphere when explosions occur. A weird 1 second stutter when changing weapons which supposedly occurs if you use epic and legendary weapons or if you have too much ammo in your inventory.\n\nAll in all Starfield is a great game. Is it game of the year material? *shrugs* Maybe. But I will tell you one thing: this game is highly addicting and with the amount of interesting quests, exploration, base building and ship building this will net you at least 200 hours minimum of video game enjoyment. For the price, it's worth it. Even better, it's on xbox pc gamepass so if you don't want to pay full price you don't have to and just subscribe for around $2 a month (119 PHP in the Philippines).",

"review": "This game is frustratingly mediocre. I think my biggest problem with the game so far is just how un-open it actually feels. They took a setting that should feel massive and managed to find a way to make it feel it small. It feels like it is a very large collection of small instances. Every time you open a door, it is a another loading screen. I feel like the SSD requirement is only to allow those loads to happen quickly, so as not to shatter the illusion that this is a big open world. The enemy AI is actually terrible. Mobs will aggro onto you but not chase you. They will disengage very quickly and get stuck on any kind of corner they can find. The starship combat is one of the weakest weakest systems in the game. It feels like one of the earliest X-wing games with very little improvement made to it. You spend 20 seconds trying to get an enemy ship into your sights only to have it go streaking out of view after 2 seconds and then you rinse and repeat. I fought 3 ships in the tutorial and I hope I never have to use this system again.\n\nI went into this expecting a typical Bethesda game. Something that is riddled with bugs, but underneath of it there is a strong game play loop that is fun and engaging. This doesn't feel like that. This feels like a fairly polished game in terms of bugs, but riddled with bad design choices and bad systems that have a much more negative and long lasting effect on the game play experience.",

"review": "I've spent $100 on this game and I don't regret it... but I wouldn't recommend it either. I've enjoyed every single Bethesda game from Morrowind to Fallout 76 and that doesn't change here. I found enjoyment in the game but around 30 hours in I realized that this wasn't gonna be like Bethesda's previous titles. Todd Howard did a good job of managing expectations but I still couldn't help but feel disappointed.\n\nIn a game about exploring the mysteries of space and joining a space exploration group, exploration isn't fun. It took me veering off the beaten path ~3 times for me to come to this realization and the issue lies with their procedural generation. \n
\n
There are few structures and tons of places for those structures to spawn. \n
The structures are the EXACT same. No variety and companion comments are the same. I explored an abandoned farm and ~600m from it was the exact same location. I had thought it was a continuation because I missed the full story on the previous farm but no, it was a literal copy and paste. The companion triggers were in the exact same spot with the exact same comment. I even remember one of the comments, it was something along the lines of \"We have to do these scientists justice by finding their research\" and in previous games this would've been a short quest but in this one it was just a throwaway comment. \n
Those static objects you see in proc gen locations will be there in the next one. I found an Advanced Urban Eagle at level 3 from an abandoned He-3 mine. Around 10 levels later I find it again in the same spot... and again when I encountered another one of those copy-pasted mines. There's also a dead Crimson Fleet Pirate on the outskirts of one of these locations. He's there every time regardless of enemy type.\n
The main quest uses these locations with an added cave section to it that takes two seconds to walk through... like okay?\n

\"We hope everybody enjoys it for what it is, but it is an exploration different than we've had\"
Different, yes -- but not better nor equal.\n
\nExploring planets also sucked. \n
\n
Your only option to get around was using your feet. It works in other Bethesda games because you can stop somewhere and you will 100% encounter SOMETHING. In this game you're just walking for fun, maybe you get to scan some flora, fauna, or a rock but don't worry if you don't because you'll see them again on another planet. \n
I'll give them props because the planets had different biomes as well as a large variety of flora and fauna. Obviously you'll see repeats it's not plausible for them to make something different for every planet; but unfortunately, at the end of the day, the planets still felt the same. \n
I did notice there were seemingly more interesting planets to explore as I played but ~40 hours in I had given up on exploring any further and didn't even bother.\n

\"I think there's a certain beauty to landing on those and feeling 'I'm one of the only people or the only person to ever visit this planet,'\" said Howard.
Every planet has been touched by humanity. There's a proc gen location in each and every one of these planets.\n
\nThe game is heavily quest driven and relies a lot on dialogue. Dialogue is something I've never cared for and goddamn is there a lot of it. If you enjoy that then that's cool but personally it wasn't for me so it's not something I could say was positive or negative. I can speak on the quests though.\n
\n
  UC Vanguard:
Honestly this felt like it could've been the main story. I enjoyed it and it was fairly compelling even if it was a bit predictable. The response to my final choice felt weird though, there wasn't a right or wrong but every companion made me feel like there was a right choice despite it making sense for them to side either way. I did this questline first and had high hopes for every other one but SIKE. A set piece here is also reused for the main quest. It made sense in this questline, not so much for the main quest.
\n
  UC Sysdef/Crimson Fleet:
This one was alright. I tried to blend in as much as possible while remaining good but the choices you make really don't matter at all. The downside of starting this questline is if you have a quest where you have to kill Crimson Fleet members you WILL accrue a high bounty if you're seen doing it. Like it was fun, you're a pirate searching for treasure, except you're in space. Can't hate on that.
\n
  Freestar Rangers:
DISAPPOINTING and BAD. Started off strong with a little mystery and some handcrafted set pieces as well as the narrative of serving the people while also keeping the big guys happy. Unfortunately, the end to this wasn't good. The final battle was you killing a guy in a mech factory. He has a name and dialogue but is otherwise just another faceless enemy. Spice it up, let him use the mech he already doesn't care about regulations. The conclusion to the story was very tell not show. They TELL me the big bad guy was in fact not bad-- in fact, he was a pretty stand up guy and he was just doing what was necessary. Like every person you interact with says this and if you respond with \"Nah I think he was pretty shit\" They'll respond with \"Nah you're wrong lil bro.\" So why in my interactions with him he was a pretty shit guy? In fact, one of my hired companions told me he was a shit guy too - like it was integral to her backstory - so why are you trying to make it a moral dilemma? It felt forced.
\n
  Ryujin Industries:
ACTUALLY FUN. I liked this one despite it relying on a poorly implemented mechanic (stealth). I did this one last and maybe it was because it was a change of pace but I enjoyed this one as well as the story they came up with.
\n
  Main Quests:
I didn't feel very strongly about these quests. Some of them were cool because they were handcrafted but there were some that took place in a proc gen dungeon so what was the point of doing it. I liked the direction they took, it was kind of grounded in reality. I still wish there were advanced aliens though lol. Didn't like the temples though. At first it was cool, but then you gotta do that slow ass zero-g floating around bs 24x. Even more on NG+
\n
  New Game Plus:
I STARTED a NG+ playthrough because when you're out of quests there isn't really much to do but I never finished it. The Starborn dialogue they give you feels like a glorified pass this persuasion check option and I wish it was implemented better. Maybe it gets better but in the quests that I started it felt like ass and I really don't feel like playing this game anymore.
\n
\n\nOverall, the game felt disappointing and unfinished. There were many times when I felt like I was onto something good and then it just stopped there. My prime example of this is the Red Mile. There are probably 2-3 quests that send you there, one of them is for the explicit purpose of just going there; it's also mentioned a couple of times, so you know I would expect it to be something cool right? When I get there I get to talk to a few people and the one thing you can do is run from one location to another and then back. Do that 30+ times you get a reward. Like great, is that it?\n\nI'm not sure if this game can be fixed with updates or even mods. I really hope I'm wrong because I enjoyed it I just had the feeling that it needed something more every time I played. The one mechanic I enjoyed with the only flaw being the controls sometimes was ship building. I could spend hours on that.\n\n
3/5
",

What even is this game supposed to be? \n\nIt reeks of scope changes constantly derailing a game brought on by bosses that refuse to let their creatives do their thing. Trust goes a long way in the gaming industry; have you ever played a good indie game Mister Howard? Do you know why tiny-budget indie games get better reviews than your games? Do you even play games? If you did, you'd realize the gaming community doesn't give a crap about your stock price. We buy games that are built by people that care and are proud about what they do, not auto-generated by algorithms and \"AI\". Spending time on gimmicks when time could have been better spent writing and creating actual, memorable experiences shows that you don't seem to notice that you've turned your company into one of the copy-pasted lifeless \"planets\" that we've all scorned.\n\nBethesda really feels like it's become (even more) a mindless, soulless corporation that's out of ideas, looking to have a long term money tree padding their bottom line instead of remembering why games like Oblivion/Skyrim/Fallout 3/etc were so good. Posting patronizing, BS PR-driven responses to reviews only digs their hole deeper. \n\nThis is what happens when the Marketing department gets control of a company; learn to listen to our feedback, rather than try and tell us \"we're wrong\". Gaming is collaborative by nature, and refusing the help of your customers is just a terrible idea.",

I do really like this game and I think the fast travel; which a lot of folk say is a detriment; is a bonus. It allows you to either role play flying the ship, or skip it all and just focus on the story. \n\nI thought I wouldn't like this game and it turns out I love it.",
