Want to puzzle out a wireless issue or tell me why I don't get it?

I am trying to learn what the heck I gotta do to play Steam games on my television with a game controller - and have been out of the loop for a while. Details within. I have:

Vizio 4k Ultra television using
TiVo Streak 4k
a home wireless network
desktop computer running Windows 10 and Steam in the back room
GameSir T3 Wireless Game Controller

I can easily start Steam on my desktop computer, and then access via the television using Steam Link as an app. But my TiVo remote is the only controller.

Put the wireless USB stick into the back of the television, tried to pair the controller - controller indicates paired. But television does not "recognize" controller, even when searched for with Bluetooth.

Okay, so....put wireless USB stick into USB on computer, can use controller to play games on computer screen while standing in front of computer.

Does the computer need to be in the same room as the television so that the USB is in the computer and the controller connects to the USB stick in the computer? What do I not understand and/or what am I missing to make this work? I know I sound a zillion years old, hope me. Thank you!

My 6 month old Tivo Edge died. Tivo will replace it but isn't offering to transfer my recordings. Mostly I just want my unwatched NBA playoff games. (I'm about 10 days behind on watching the playoffs). Tivo says "We do not recommend removing the drive" but can I remove the drive, put it in an enclosure, and attach it to my Tivo Bolt to transfer those games?

Also, is there a legit way to watch these past NBA games by some other means? Torrent?

Confused about TiVo alterrnatives

We're trying to decide between upgrading our TiVo or going another way. Challenge: I'm not sure what the other way is. We currently have a TiVo Premiere XL4 (2012) and a DVD player. We record a lot of TV shows and NFL games off cable TV. We mainly use the Amazon and Netflix apps on TiVo. We like TiVo generally but the apps take almost a minute to start up.

Option 1:

Upgrade to a TiVo Bolt. The main advantage is that is a drop-in replacement into our familiar setup. Downside is our cable bill would be the same.

Option 2:

Maybe a new smart TV that has built-in apps for Amazon, Netflix, etc., plus the networks we like? Or Sling TV? If we don't have cable do we get TV via internet? If we don't have DVR how do we catch up on shows?

Bonus: I have some movies on my iMac I'd like to play on TV.

How Best to Identify a Network Problem

My Tivo frequently loses connection to the network, which creates substantial problems. Since there are a lot of expensive wires and devices that could be the cause of the issue, it's not cost effective to start replacing components until the issue is fixed. Is there a better way to pinpoint the source of a problem on a home network? I have:
Verizon Fios (Los Angeles) including a Verizon ONT that was already installed when I moved in a year ago
Verizon WiFi Router
Moca Bridge - ordered from Tivo about 1 year ago
TiVo Roamio HD Digital Video Recorder and Streaming Media Player (TCD846500) - ordered about 1 year ago
Two Tivo Minis
Coax Cable runs that are split in a couple of places to go to 3 rooms.

The Roamio connects directly to the WiFi Router via Ethernet. The Moca bridge is also connected to that router via Ethernet (as well as the coax). I also have a smart TV (samsung) connected to that router. The Tivo Minis have built in Moca networking and are connected via the coax directly in 2 separate rooms.

Everything worked fine for 10 months. I started with TimeWarner cable for the first 6 months of that, but once I switched to Verizon the network continued to work for 4 months with no issues.

Then suddenly, the Tivo minis would only play content from the Roamio for about 20 minutes before losing connection to the Roamio and forcing me to restart playback. This happens consistently and makes the Minis very unpleasant to watch.

The Tivo Roamio will also periodically lose connection to the Internet, which it does not like at all. This causes delays when navigating the menus, and means I have to wait for the connection to reestablish if I'm trying to search or create one passes. Playback on the Roamio seems fine although I do occasionally see some video stuttering.

I access Netflix via the Tivo, and practically never run into a problem -- even when viewing on the Minis. I think Netfix may be doing a better job of caching/handling latency The Tivo OS seems to require a rock steady connection.

I've tried looking at bandwidth usage to the minis and on the Tivo. I seem to have a fast enough connection. I think it's just that it's intermittently dropping a connection for a few seconds somewhere and that's enough to panic the Tivo.

I've rebooted all system. I've called Verizon and they remotely rebooted the ONT, ran whatever remote network diagnostics they have and sent some command or other to the ONT.

I tried replacing the ethernet connections to the router. Almost every other component would be too expensive to replace without knowing that is the source of the problem.

I've thought about having a Verizon tech (or other tech) come out, but that's a minimum of $50 and I'm not sure if they are equipped to diagnose problems with the Tivos.

When they installed Verizon, I asked about enabling Moca on the ONT, but was told they only do that if you're using their whole home DVRs, so I kept using the Moca bridge I already had which did work for a while.

What's the best next step? Do I just need some diagnostic tool I can pick up cheap, or do I need to have a tech out, or can I do something else I don't know to try?

How is the channel quality & user experience on the Tablo DVR?

I had a Simple.tv, but it stunk. Channel quality was terrbile with my Mohu Leaf - when I plug the Leaf directly into my TV I received more channels, and in better quality. With Simple.tv not only did I not get all of the channels, but it was also terrible to use, constant freezing, needing to reboot, stuttering picture.

I'm considering the Tablo or the Roamio OTA, but the monthly sub for the Roamio is $10 more than Tablo's.... are there any satisfied Tablo owners that can give me the green light?

Help me fix my entertainment system.

AV experts, can you help me? I set up my current home entertainment system 11 years ago, and it's worked well for me. Now it is failing, and consumer electronics have moved on. I can't just replace the failing component with a new one because it is not being manufactured any longer, and I only need some parts of it. I'm having trouble integrating new things into the old setup. I need to upgrade/reconfigure my AV, and possibly wireless. Details inside. I have:
•	Samsung flat screen HDTV (720p, good enough for a 32-inch TV I watch from eight feet away).
•	Series 2 80-hour dual tuner TiVo that updates via wifi (but the signal strength is often too weak).
•	Philips LX3750 DVD player and digital surround sound system with amp and receiver that is starting to be unreliable at reading DVDs. I no longer get surround sound, just stereo. Some of the smaller speakers are shot but the subwoofer is still good.
•	Netflix plan (no longer offered) that suits me: two DVDs a month, one at a time ($5.37/mo). No streaming media.
•	Metric buttload of physical media (CDs and DVDs) with content that I do not want to pay for again.
•	Laptop that belongs to my employer. I don’t want to use it to store personal content.
•	Digital TV antenna (aka peasant vision). I get a dozen broadcast channels and I’m not interested in cable or satellite.
•	Amazon Firestick that I have not been able to set up because the wireless signal is too weak.
•	Two vintage JBL 2800 bookshelf speakers, circa 1989, in perfect condition.
•	Two JBL Pro Performers J225 speakers, likewise in perfect condition.
•	Actiontec 802.11g wireless DSL modem/router that lives at the other end of the house, in my office.

Here's what I want to do:
•	Watch DVDs (my own and from Netflix). Preferably with excellent sound quality. Surround sound would be nice; I get a kick out of knocking pictures off the wall occasionally.
•	Watch broadcast TV.
•	Listen to AM and FM radio.
•	Listen to audio CDs.
•	Listen to Pandora in my living room. Actually, I want to do all of this in my living room.
•	Get the Firestick working. I have Amazon Prime and I’ve been missing out on a ton of already-paid-for programming.
•	Stop worrying about whether the TiVo will be able to update itself via wireless.

Here’s what I’m asking:
•	What can I buy to replace the DVD player/tuner/surround sound system? I’m resigned to buying a Blu-Ray player, but haven’t seen one with a tuner/amp that does not also include speakers or sound bar, which I do not need. Do I have to buy these things (player and receiver) separately?
•	Do I have to replace the Actiontec in my office in order to boost the signal enough to make the Firestick work, and the TiVo update reliably, in the living room at the other end of the house? It's a small house (1100 square feet) but there are a lot of walls in between.
•	Is it possible to get surround sound with the four JBLs, one of the small Philips speakers, and the Philips subwoofer? Is there some reason any old speakers won't work with whatever player/receiver/amp I get to replace the Philips system?

Are these stupid questions? Don't judge! Old ladies need home entertainment too.

What is the current best method for getting DVR content to multiple sets

Moving from a situation where I have 1 TV to one where I will have multiple TVs. What is the high-quality budget alternative to get DVR content to multiple sets? I currently have a TiVo TCD748000 Premiere XL with lifetime service, and want to be able to keep DVR functionality. The costs for additional TVs whether rented through TimeWarner or Verizon FIOS or purchased from TiVo seem ridiculously high to me. My TiVo model doesn't support the TiVo Minis. I think it might support TiVo Stream, but it looks like that will only get content to iOS devices. Roku can act as a TimeWarner cable box, but that doesn't get me access to DVR functions. I could get a new TiVo Romio with a few TiVo Minis, but that ends up being over $1,000 for lifetime service subscriptions or equivalent to the monthly cost of equipment rental from the providers.

What is the best cord cutting setup?

I'm considering finally dropping cable and implementing a home DVR solution that captures over-the-air channels. I'm in the Phoenix metro area so will have no problems picking up the basic channels. I'm leaning toward the Simple.TV (the new one with two tuners) setup but wanted to see what other options might be out there. I subscribe to Netflix and have an Apple TV but don't want to pay for other subscriptions - which eliminates the Tivo. I also want everything to run off a dedicated "box" so I don't have to use a computer to manage things. So - in your experience, what works well? What doesn't? Is the Simple.TV 2 decent... or junky? I know this question has been addressed before but don't know what might be new in the last year-ish.

Cutting the Cable

I have a Series 2 Tivo (dual tuner, with a 542 serial number if it matters), with the old lifetime subscription (so we don't pay monthly for the Tivo service). We would like to ditch our cable and get a Mohu Leaf Ultimate HDTV Antenna. Is there any way to keep our ability Tivo things without replacing the Tivo (and thereby losing our lifetime Tivo service?).
CableCard needed. Difficulty: Comcast

So, through a series of unfortunate events we've made the switch to Comcast for tv & internet. In conjunction with the switch, we got a new Tivo Roamio. In order to make it work, we need a CableCard. How can I get one as painlessly as possible? The first time I called, I was told the local (30+ minutes away) office would have cards, but they were closed for the holidays so they would mail me one to install myself. After three weeks I called for an update and was told nothing was sent, nor would it be. Since then, I've spent hours on the phone and have been given all manner of conflicting information, always including one or more of the following: I can only pick one up at the local service center, I must have it professionally installed and pay for a tech visit, and finally that in some markets or situations they can be mailed. One especially clueless rep even told me I could purchase one at Best Buy. After being told last weekend that one would be shipped to me from the dedicated CableCard team, I called today for an update only to be told that I had been misled again. Has anyone has success actually getting Comcast to provide a CableCard?

DVR/PVR options without a cable box?

Living in on-campus housing for the next 3 years, and have school provided cable and no cable box. There is no dvr that I could get through the university.
What are my best options for dvr-like service? Right now, the cable is just plugged in to the tv.

I've been looking at Tivo, PVR, and some others but I am not sure which is best or cheapest over 3 years.
I'd prefer not to need to use a computer for this, but if it is the best setup then I will do that.

Details:
-We have 2 tvs and would like to be able to watch and delete recorded shows from either one. It is ok if we can only record from one of them, as long as they sync.
-We don't have a cable card (which I think is needed for Tivo) but we are going to see if we can get one.
-We would like to be able to program recordings of every airing of a show (like a season pass) instead of having to record each one manually.
-It would be a bonus if we could stream the shows to the ipad or have them available while traveling, but not necessary.
-Spending up-front is ok if the solution is the best for long term, especially if it could be used to save money at our next (non-campus) place.

So what should we do?
And, if we cannot get a cable card, what are our options?

I've seen this previous question which ended in a Tivo subscription but my circumstances are different)

We're ditching our cable and researching alternatives.

We have two HD TiVo Series 3 boxes that we're not using (because the cable cards provided by Comcast would not work).

We're thinking of a set-up involving OTA television (we live in Atlanta, so reception should not be a problem) + something streaming, but we're not sure if we want to keep the TiVos or invest in something else -- Roku? Boxee? AppleTV?

And here's one major issue for me -- live sports (mainly the NFL and college football)?

How to get Comcast and Tivo to work together?

I have a Tivo Premiere. I have Comcast. How do I avoid throwing my TV out the window in frustration? About once a week I'll turn on HBO and see a message that that channel is not authorized. It is authorized, so I call Comcast, spend 10 minutes dealing with their customer service line, they send a signal to my Tivo's cable card, and within an hour HBO is working properly... for a while.

Last week I called Comcast and got it temporarily fixed through the phone menus. I dialed the usual Comcast number, followed the prompts, and was given an option along the lines of "If you are seeing an error message that the channel is not authorized, press 3." I pressed it, Comcast did something, and HBO clicked on immediately. I didn't have to deal with their customer service and the results were instant.

This happens with a few other channels, as well. Sometimes I sit down to watch several day's worth of shows and find that none of them have been recorded because of that issue. This is annoying.

My questions:
1. Who's fault is this? Tivo's? Comcast's? Mine?
Is there a website to help me keep track of which episodes of a TV series I've watched? I love the Walking Dead. It went on break last fall and I missed that it started up a month ago and now a couple of the episodes my Tivo recorded have already disappeared. More generally I watch TV out of order, or in bursts, and I can never keep track of which episodes of something I watched or when they'll rebroadcast.

I'm looking for a website where I sign up and say "I like this show" and it keeps track of which episodes I watched, which have been shown but I haven't seen yet, and notifies me when they're being broadcast, shown again on cable, or made available via iTunes/Netflix/Amazon or whatever. I wouldn't mind some social features like GoodReads where I share my opinions on shows with friends, but mostly I just want to keep track of what I'm watching. A site like EpGuides has most of the raw data (episode numbers, original air date) but it doesn't have a personal viewing tracking system. Bonus points if it works well for a prolific show like Chopped which has a zillion episodes and not much of a fanbase keeping tracking of them all.

Wireless router is back up and running after password change...but now TiVo won't connect. I'm sure there's a simple fix. Please tell me what it is!

Changing wireless router password was predictably a mess, but got that fixed and now the TiVo isn't connected. Need help with something that surely is simple...just not to me. I changed the password on my router last week so visiting family could use it without putting in that ridiculous default string. Predictably, trying to change it turned into a GIANT mess wherein I had to call tech support and pay them to help me change settings and get it working again. Good (I guess). Only now the TiVo is disconnected from the router because the router is currently set to WPA and the TiVo will only recognize WEP. I'm getting that WEP is less secure, but if I change the settings to WEP, will it alter other router settings and stop working again? Will I have to call and pay again for help (I REALLY can't do that)? When I try to change the router settings, I get this message, so I haven't changed it for fear of it stopping working completely again. Do I really need to buy a special adapter to get the TiVo connected again? This is really a foreign language to me (one in which the slightest alteration = disaster, apparently), though I consider myself fairly tech savvy. Halp!

Send to Tivo. Simple as that.

Is there a Readability-like app for video that will send YouTube videos to my Tivo or Apple TV with one or two mouse clicks? In my ideal world rather than click on a link to YouTube I could right-click and select "Send to Apple TV" or "Send to Tivo" and then when I got home I could turn on my TV and see a playlist with all the videos I've sent. Pretty much exactly how Readabiity works with my Kindle.

It would have to be able to do this from any computer, even if it didn't have iTunes on it. So a simple browser add-on would be best. It won't help me if I can only do it from my computer at home. I realize I can bookmark stuff with a cloud-based bookmark thing during the day and then watch them at home on a computer. No good, I want them on my TV.

I do not want to build any sort of home-grown Linux Tivo wanna-be system.

I *do* have XBMC on my jailbroken Apple TV 2. I would rather not have to use that but if what I want can work with that, I'll take it.

I have a feeling I'm overlooking something obvious here, like what I want already exists within those products. I suppose I could follow the link and favorite something on YouTube and then browse to my favorite list but I'd rather not even go to YouTube in the first place.

I want it to be as simple as possible. Right-click, send, go home, sit my lazy ass on the couch and have my TV help me catch up on the day's "must see" videos.

Tivo Replacement options

My TiVo Series 2 has finally died. The hard drive has failed. I could replace the hard drive, but I'd like to upgrade my general environment. What are my options if I still want to be able to watch live TV with PVR functions? My current setup is digital cable feeding to my (dead) TiVo series 2 (and also directly to the TV), plus a Wii with the Netflix app, and an ancient (maybe 15-years old) DVD player.

I really like being able to schedule recordings and pause live tv. We watch a fair amount of Netflix, but have regular TV shows we like recording, including some sports (European soccer mostly). It would be nice to digitize my fairly small DVD collection, put them on my 1TB Synology server, and access them on demand. Occasionally, when all else fails we download something and watch it on a regular computer. Being able to push that to the TV would be nice too.

I use cable for internet with no reasonable alternatives, so I cannot ditch cable completely, but I've thought about going with satellite for TV and their PVR, or even using the cable company's PVR option (Comcast), but I don't like them, they keep raising their prices, and their stuff is typically poorly designed. Since I use the Wii for Netflix, I don't think I would get much out of a Boxee or Roku, would I? It looks like the Boxee can play network-stored videos now, so maybe I would.

Do I want something like XBMC with a MythTV backend (the differences between PVRs and Media Centers confuse me a bit)? If so, what kind of hardware do I need? I do not have any Mac OS devices (aside from an iPad). I do have wifi.

Or do I just upgrade to the latest Tivo or some other option that I've overlooked? Thanks in advance.

Where's the best place to buy home electronics in the Twin Cities?

Where should I go in the Twin Cities to buy an audio-video setup to fit a somewhat specific situation? I'm looking to fit a new TV/TiVo/maybe other items into a specific space and am also hoping to have it work with some kind of wireless headphone setup. Possibly other features depending on what home electronics can do these days - I don't really know. The real question is, I'm going to be pressed for time in shopping, and don't want to spend a lot of time comparison shopping. So where can I go in the Twin Cities for good customer service that will help me figure out exactly what hardware will give me the setup that I want? Bonus points for installation services. Good deals are nice, but I'm willing to pay a bit more to get one-stop-shopping and the kind of customer service that makes you walk out feeling like you accomplished something, not thinking "I hope this all works."

Why are certain Netflix shows jittery on certain devices and not others?

Why are certain Netflix shows jittery on certain devices, while other combinations of devices/shows are not? I have three devices at home (aside from my laptop) that can stream Netflix. For a long time now, if I stream a Netflix program on my Tivo or Roku, there is a chance that the program will be jittery.

By jittery, I do not mean that frames start getting sporadically dropped here and there like you would see with a bandwidth or CPU load problem, but that from the first second of playback to the last, there is maybe one frame missing every 24 (just to give an estimate). Jittery-ness never starts in the middle of a show or stops before the end.

If I find, on one of these devices, that the program is jittery, then I know it will be jittery on both devices. And, no matter how many times I try to restart playback, or what time of day or what month I try it, it will always be the case. On the other hand, if I play the same program with the Wii or my laptop, it will never be jittery.

One difference between Roku/Tivo and my Wii is that the Wii does not stream HD but the other two do. So, I tried setting my Roku to SD and it still had exactly the same jitters. Aside from that my laptop does HD fine. All three devices are hooked up to the same router via ethernet (and my laptop is wifi), so it is not a wifi issue.

Examples of programs that are always jittery:

- Lilyhammer series
- Downton Abbey series

(It is not exclusively TV shows, but I can't recall any specific movie titles at the moment.)

I have been surprised to see little discussion of people with similar problems, as it seemed to me that it had to be a video-encoding issue. But if it were then lots of people should have been complaining about Downton Abbey and Lilyhammer. So I am stumped.

My hardware:

- Tivo HD (not premiere)
- Roku 2 XS
- Wii from 2008

What should I do with my old Tivo Series 2?

What should I do with my old SD Tivo Series 2 box now that I've gone to HD DirecTV? I miss pyTivoX! I was a huge Tivo fan boy, but after switching to HD, and many problems with my cable provider not working with my Tivo Premiere, I finally gave up on Tivo. I sold the Premiere on eBay and made all my money back (and then some), switched to DirecTV & now use their DVR.

I still have my Series 2 with lifetime service sitting in a closet. I really miss pyTivoX. Being able to send almost any format of video from my MacBook to the Tivo over my network was awesome! Other than the Tivo UI, I think I miss that most of all. I think I can now get similar functionality out of an Apple TV with some of the hacks available, but not sure. I'm guessing, even if I set up the Tivo again as a network connected media server only, I'd be limited to standard def, correct? Also, would the Tivo even work without some kind of TV signal?

Assuming there's really no use for my SD Tivo in an HD setup, I've considered selling it on eBay. I have everything, including the box, wired network adapter, etc., and it's in excellent condition. Expect I could get near $200 for it.

Any other thoughts?

Stream PC -> Tivo

How can I stream video from a PC to a Tivo cable box? I would love to spend days figuring this out, but I want ths working by tomorrow. So I'm hoping somebody can give me a headstart.

I have a Tivo DVR and cable box provided by Grande Cable. It's supposed to be able to stream things from youtube and other internet sites, although I've never done that yet. Can I set my PC as a media server, and stream to the Tivo from there?

I run Linux on the PC, but I'm open to other options. I'd like to stream 720p video. The Tivo is on wireless-N, the PC is hardwired.

Movie Download Formats

When I purchase an on-demand movie from Blockbuster on Tivo, why do I receive only the "letterboxed" (480i) version instead of the "full-screen" 1080 HD? I understand the ratio/aspect reasoning behind letterboxing but I find it hard to watch at my viewing distance from the screen. Is there a way to change the settings to receive full-screen HD or are only "letterboxed" versions available from Blockbuster on Tivo? My search for an answer has been fruitless. I have a 46" Sharp 1080P HDTV and use RCN cable. Thanks.

Tivo and Video Streaming

Tivo and streaming local video files? I'm looking at replacing our current DVR with a Tivo, and I'm trying to get a feel for how well Tivos are able to stream video files off a local network.

I have ripped all my movie DVDs and several TV shows into iTunes (on Windows) as mp4 formatted files. I understand that Tivo should be able to play these via a file share but I can't get a feel for how well this works.

When I search Google, the answers I get are all usually from 2008 and earlier. Some refer to the Streambaby software, which I've looked at and seems easy enough to configure, but I can't get any indication what this would look like on the Tivo interface.

Has anyone done this with Tivo? What does the interface actually look like, ie does it show cover art or is it just a file listing?
