Hello Subscriber First Name! One of the things the Beacon strives to do is bring thoughtful solutions-based reporting to Jefferson County. This week, Derek Firenze delivers on that promise by reporting on the latest study on the environmental impact of the Port Townsend Paper Mill. We plan on writing more about the QFC/Safeway sale, but as there is so much misinformation on the internet, I thought I’d take a moment to clarify things. The parent company of Safeway and QFC has sold 124 stores in Washington, including the two QFCs in Jefferson County. The buyer is C&S Wholesale Grocers, which also owns the Piggly Wiggly stores. According to one source, QFC union members have contracts for at least another year, so it’s unlikely those stores will close in the immediate future. We’ll keep you updated as we learn more.
