CEO of Nation’s Largest Health Insurance Company Killed in New York City

In midtown Manhattan, early this morning, 50-year-old Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, was shot and killed in what appears, at this early stage of our investigation, to be a brazen, targeted attack.

OF NOTE: UnitedHealthcare is the largest private health insurance company in the nation. The company also employs more physicians than any other health company in America. UnitedHealthcare’s parent company, UnitedHealth Group, is one of the largest companies in the nation by revenue.

Who: Brian Thompson, 50, served as CEO of UnitedHealthcare and also Vice President at UnitedHealth Group.

When: The morning of the crime, UnitedHealth Group planned to hold its annual investor meeting in New York City, at the Hilton right in the heart of midtown Manhattan.

What Happened: Reports suggest a targeted murder, with the victim shot twice as he arrived at the hotel before 7 a.m. Eastern Time. “The suspect was described as a white male wearing a coat, black face mask, and black and white sneakers. Officials said he was carrying a gray backpack.” (The New York Post)

The New York Police Department is offering a $10,000 reward for information: “This does not appear to be a random act of violence.” The NYPD says they will speak with law enforcement in Minnesota and the investigation remains ongoing.
