My message is clear: Eat real food.

HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announcing the new Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Why It Matters: The Dietary Guidelines shape federal food policy nationwide, including school meal programs, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), and military dining facilities.

The New Dietary Guidelines for Americans:

  • Prioritize protein, healthy fats, vegetables, fruits, and whole grains, while advising against highly-processed foods, added sugars, and refined carbohydrates. Encourage fermented and high-fiber foods to support gut health.
  • Provide specific intake ranges for protein, recommending 1.2 – 1.6 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day (1 kg = 2.2 lbs).
  • Remove previous daily alcohol limits (2 drinks for men and 1 for women). Instead, the guidelines encourage Americans to “consume less alcohol for better overall health.”

What Others Are Saying:

  • The American Medical Association praised the changes. Its president, Dr. Bobby Mukkamala, said, “The Guidelines affirm that food is medicine and offer clear direction patients and physicians can use to improve health.”
  • Another Perspective: Harvard epidemiologist and nutrition professor Dr. Walter Willett criticized the emphasis on red meats and dairy, warning that the approach “will not lead to optimally healthy diets or a healthy planet.”
