His life was also a broader love story about love for his fellow humans and about living out the commandment to love your neighbor as yourself.
President Jimmy Carter’s grandson Jason Carter, speaking at the 39th president’s funeral service on Thursday morning at the Washington National Cathedral.
Why It Matters: Friends and family, government officials and all living U.S. presidents gathered to honor and remember President Carter’s life of leadership and service. Multiple tributes were written for the nation’s first centenarian President, including eulogies by President Biden and one penned by President Gerald Ford before his death (read Thursday by his son). The service also featured several speakers and musical performances, including President Carter’s favorite Beatles song “Imagine.”
Carter, who died at 100 on Dec. 29, 2024, was the longest-lived U.S. president. A private memorial takes place Thursday afternoon at Maranatha Baptist Church in his hometown of Plains, Georgia, where President Carter taught Sunday school after his presidency. Following the service, President Carter will be buried at Plains Cemetery beside his wife, Rosalynn Carter.
