Time Magazine, getting this honor for the second time, I think I like it better this time actually.
President-elect Donald Trump prior to ringing the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) just hours after being named TIME Person of the Year for the second time (first was in 2016). President-elect Trump is also the first president since Pres. Reagan to ring the NYSE bell.
For Context: Time Magazine began identifying a Person of the Year nearly 100 years ago, beginning in 1927. Other primary contenders for this year’s cover included Vice President Kamala Harris, Elon Musk (who appeared on the cover in 2021), Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Catherine, Princess of Wales. Almost every president has been featured as Time’s Person of the Year, with the exception of Gerald Ford, Herbert Hoover and Calvin Coolridge.
Big Picture: Time Magazine sat down with President-elect Trump at his home in Mar-a-Lago for the cover story interview. The interview covers an array of topics including President-elect Trump’s campaign journey and what it was like when Vice President Harris joined the race, his experience surviving two assassination attempts, his process for choosing cabinet positions and his feelings on beginning his second and last term. In the final sentences, President-elect Trump describes the feeling of knowing his last campaign is now behind him, saying, “It’s sad in a way. It will never happen again.”
Regarding the decision to put President-elect Trump on the cover, Time Editor-in-chief Sam Jacobs described him as someone who “for better or for worse, had the most influence on the news in 2024.” He added, “This is someone who made an historic comeback, who reshaped the American presidency and who’s reordering American politics. It’s hard to argue with the fact that the person who’s moving into the Oval Office is the most influential person in news.”
