This killer is being hailed as a hero. Hear me on this: he is no hero.
Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro in a briefing on Monday evening after authorities arrested the suspect that shot and killed UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson on a New York City sidewalk last week.
What To Know: Since the murder of Brian Thompson and subsequent arrest of the suspected shooter, 26-year-old Luigi Mangione, some online discourse has considered Mangione a hero representing overall dislike for the healthcare insurance industry. Gov. Shapiro addressed the different reactions to the shooting and death of Thompson saying, “I have no tolerance, nor should anyone, for one man using an illegal ghost gun to murder someone because he thinks his opinion matters most. In a civil society, we are all less safe when ideologues engage in vigilante justice.”
More Context: Police arrested Mangione on Monday at a McDonald’s in Altoona, PA, after an employee recognized him from media reports and called police. Found with a three-page manifesto, a gun and silencer, as well as fake IDs, Mangione was arraigned Monday in Altoona on forgery and gun charges. It has since been disclosed that Mangione faces multiple charges including second-degree murder in Manhattan, where the shooting occurred.
