I did this as an accommodation, and out of respect for, President Sheinbaum. Our relationship has been a very good one, and we are working hard, together, on the Border, both in terms of stopping Illegal Aliens from entering the United States and, likewise, stopping Fentanyl.

President Donald Trump after a call with Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum where he agreed to pause tariffs on most Mexican goods for 30 days. Now, the same goes for Canada.

What Happened: Earlier this week, a 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico, along with 10% on Chinese goods, took effect. (In addition to the 10% already in effect against China).

  • Since that announcement, Pres. Trump agreed to pause tariffs on automakers for one month to give them extra time to figure out how to move more factories stateside.
  • Pres. Trump also announced he will pause tariffs on most Mexican and Canadian goods until April 2.
  • The goods exempt from the tariffs comply with the 2020 United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) trade pact. According to the White House, this covers about 50% of imports from Mexico and 36% from Canada.
  • Pres. Sheinbaum responded to the president’s decision on X saying, “We will continue to work together, particularly on migration and security issues, which include reducing the illegal crossing of fentanyl into the United States, as well as weapons into Mexico.”
  • Canadian Minister of Finance Dominic LeBlanc also responded to the news on X saying, “As a result, Canada will not proceed with the second wave of tariffs on $125B of U.S. products until April 2nd, while we continue to work for the removal of all tariffs.”
  • In his speech to Congress, Pres. Trump announced that reciprocal tariffs against any country that has tariffs on the U.S. will go into effect April 2.
