Russia brought war to others, and now it is coming home.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy concerning the recent push by the Ukrainian military into the Kursk region of Russia.
Why It Matters: Last week Ukraine launched the “biggest attack on sovereign Russian territory since the war began” as it began an offensive attack in the Kursk region of Russia, surprising Russian forces and bringing a new strategy to the over two-year war. According to Ukrainian General Oleksandr Syrskyi, Ukraine is in now control of about 386 square miles of the Kursk region, though that number has not been independently verified.
Russian forces initially were caught off-guard but have since launched an attack with missiles, drones and airstrikes. Russian President Putin said, “It’s obvious that the enemy will keep trying to destabilize the situation in the border zone to try to destabilize the domestic political situation in our country.”
