A situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of, or exposure to, a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.

The description of a Class 1 Recall, the FDA’s highest classification for a food recall, also the recently upgraded status of an egg recall which occurred last month due to concerns of salmonella.

Why It Matters: The FDA recently upgraded the status of last month’s egg recall tied to Wisconsin-based chicken and duck egg producer, Milo’s Poultry Farms. The FDA is alerting consumers about possible “serious adverse health consequences or death” because of concerns of salmonella, a type of bacteria that can make people sick. More than 60 people in at least nine states have reported illnesses because of the eggs sold in grocery stores and used in restaurants distributed throughout Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin. Thus far, a total of 24 hospitalizations have occurred. People more likely to get serious infections from salmonella poisoning include children younger than five, adults older than 65 and anyone with weakened immune systems. Symptoms include diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps.

How many eggs were recalled? Approximately 4 million. The recall applies to the following products:
-all Milo’s Poultry Farms chicken eggs
-all Tony’s Fresh Market chicken eggs
-all M&E Family Farms duck eggs
-all Happy Quackers Farm duck eggs

Should you happen to still have any of the recalled eggs in your fridge, dispose of them and disinfect any surfaces that may have come into contact with the eggs.

Did You Know? A staple ingredient in many American kitchens, according to the American Egg Board, when you open more than 90% of refrigerators in the United States, you’ll likely discover eggs.
