Our National Parks belong to each of us, and they are natural places to learn, exercise, volunteer, spend time with family and friends, and enjoy the magnificent beauty of our great land.

President George W. Bush when announcing National Park Week in 2008. The nation’s National Park Service will mark its 108th birthday on Sunday with a variety of birthday-related programming at over 400 sites.

Why It Matters: The National Park Service (NPS), established in 1916 during President Woodrow Wilson’s administration, celebrates its 108th birthday on Sunday, and they have invited all of us to join the festivities by visiting a National Park (or any other site they help manage). A federal bureau within the Department of the Interior, NPS protects over 85 million acres of land throughout the United States and Washington, D.C., plus U.S. territories. How much land is that really? Well, according to the numbers, that’s bigger than New Mexico but not quite as big as Montana.
